If you don't know what latex is, and if you don't use it, then this app may not be for you. But if you appreciate the power of latex, not just for the sciences but for the humanities too, then just get this app! It's worth its price tenfold. Texpad lets you typeset latex documents and get pdf files. You can share the latex source, the resulting pdf, or even create a zip file from an entire project, and share it with your co-athors. Texpad comes with a package manager, similar to what you get with miktex, mactex, etc. In retrospect, a package manager is the singularly best thing in Texpad: You can install whatever you need, as you need it, and you don't need to waste storage on stuff you don't need. Texpad includes bibtex as well, so you can work with bibliographies on your ipad just as you would on the desktop. Texpad comes with support for Dropbox, so sharing files among co-authors and your desktop and laptop systems couldn't be easier. I spent a lot of money on various word processing apps for my ipad, and ended up using none of them. Each one lacked some crucial functionality I needed to write some serious, scientific documents. Now it may not be obvious to you why you need a full-blown latex installation on your ipad or iphone. After all, are you really going to compose a complete paper or thesis or book, from scratch, on a cell phone or ipad? Here are some thoughts: - Texpad makes scientific notetaking possible and relatively easy. You can fix the details later, but you can type equations and formulae and mix with tables, etc. - Texpad is awesome for making those last minute corrctions when you're away from your laptop or desktop: Being able to fix some idiotic typo, EVEN on an ipad or iphone, is so much better than having to apologise and promise to send a corrected version at a later time. - If you can get your hands on a bluetooth keyboard, then typing a lot of prose is actually almost as simple as typing on a desktop. Even better, for a fraction of the cost of a bluetooth keyboard, you can get the Apple "Camera Connectivity Kit", which is nothing more than a USB connector for the ipad or iphone. Now borrow almost any USB keyboard, plug it in, ignore the message that says the device is not supported, and just type away at normal speed. A connector small enough to fit in your pocket is all you need to turn your ios device into a complete note-taking device, and with latex at your fingertips, you have all you need to do complex DTP.
