Ulysses Mobile Reviews

Great app.

ridersofberk on

United Kingdom

I love Ulysses, I use it every day and write over 10k words per week, sometime a lot more. I find the structure simple navigate and very helpful to keep projects together. The number of export options works really well for lots of different use cases. With an iPad, a decent keyboard and Ulysses there is really nothing to stop you writing…… Hope you like it as much as I do!

Update broken?

Bennlloyd on

United Kingdom

This last update seems to have froze out the renewal process for students. I select student then add image or proof and that’s where it freezes and just hangs. It stays on that window asking for proof. Uninstalled and reinstalled still there. Just frozen for me now and unusable.

Not flawless, but ...

I'm never going to write a novel ... but I write a lot of text, one way or another. And for a long time I've had several tools I would use: simple tools for tiny transient things, more comprehensive tools for larger, longer-lived things. Well, increasingly all those tools are becoming one tool: Ulysses. And that's all you could want, really: a single tool which addresses almost all of my needs for writing, on mac or iPad (and even on an iPhone). It's not a general-purpose text editor It's not for writing text with a lot of maths in it: it's a tool for writing, and as such it is almost all it needs to be.

Best markdown editor - expensive

GilesRoberts on

United Kingdom

This is the best markdown editor I've found on iPad. The Dropbox integration is good. I tend to switch quickly between documents. The view where the documents in the folder you're working on is available as you write is good. That it updates and reorders as soon as Ulysses saves puts it above the other markdown editors. The critical thing for me is large documents. Both iA Writer and MWeb seem to have a habit of crashing every so often once your documents get beyond a certain size. I'm not sure if this a fault with the editors themselves or their Dropbox integration. That makes them unusable for me. Ulysses has been rock solid so far. Again with large documents, that you can jump between headings is good. The only thing that's stopping me from giving this a 5 star review is the price. £48 for a year's editing is expensive. However I've obviously paid for it so I think that the above features are worth the money over the competition.

No RTL writing

MAlbazy on

United Kingdom

Good app, but unfortunately no RTL support and the developers seems not interested to offer it after all these years. Recently Apple Notes became really good for writing daily notes and article drafts. So just switched back and cancelled my subscription.

Couldn’t do anything

Roleplayer135 on

United Kingdom

I couldn’t write anything because I didn’t buy anything. This is extremely annoying and I won’t use this app anymore. :/

A little known fact…

Kristian Tapaninaho on

United Kingdom

I love Ulysses. I’ve been a user for many many years now. Here’s a little fun tidbit: All Ooni products start with a new document in Ulysses. That’s where all the ideas written down, pondered, re-written and mulled over. Many never make it out of Ulysses but I’m proud of all the ones that do. Thing that reminded me to write this review and give the developers a bit of kudos was that in my workflow there’s always, inevitably, a point where I need to share the work. And for us that happens via Google Docs. I hadn’t realised until recently that you can add export themes to Ulysses and then when the text is copied and pasted, all the formatting is correctly set in Google Docs. Fantastic, such a great help. Thank you :) Also a great reminder to always read the release notes as the devs are constantly adding new features. Well done and thank you for a great tool!

Ulysses — Great, iPad version — Not so much

highflyer.peter on

United Kingdom

The Mac version of Ulysses is nearly impeccable, but the iPad version constantly crashes (and I am on the latest 2021 iPad Pro). The crashes didn’t cause much damage though since the frequent auto saving and syncing, but it can be disruptive in the middle of a work flow. What’s annoying me more is the fixed area of content in the iPad app. I want to request an update to enable PINCH TO ZOOM function on iPads, I’m on a 12.9 inch iPad and the characters still appears small to me sometimes (in portrait mode), the blank spaces take up about half the screen, making this iPad app sometimes painful to use. I assume it won’t be hard to add such a feature, or if it’s just I didn’t find the setting that enables it?

Super functionality

MartyMcPayne on

United Kingdom

It’s a fantastic app for writing whilst on my phone. On desktop I use LaTeX and Markdown for my writing, so I love the WYGIWYM aspect of Ulysses. I’d like a few more functions, like \centering equivalent, custom margins and chapter page formatting. I haven’t tried exporting as markdown to desktop (windows) yet, but I’d love google drive, onedrive integration, or even dare I say - a Windows Ulysses!

Liked the app at first, let down by issues and price

MrDoninator on

United Kingdom

I wanted to like this app, but I simply can’t, the main reason is the fact that I’m unable to login to my WordPress site to publish through the app, this was one of the main reasons I downloaded this app for. After doing a google search, it turns out that in order to make it work I have to edit WordPress in the backend to make it work. I shouldn’t have to do this with an app that costs this much! I will be uninstalling once the trial period ends. The second issue is that, I can’t access it on Windows, as a multi platform user I need to be able to access the app using different devices. It’s just not worth the price in my view
