Bunpo: Learn Japanese

This has been the most frustrating app for studying Japanese I’ve come across. I bought the full version and don’t regret it, but wouldn’t recommend it. The app is riddled with errors that never get fixed like incorrect translations and superscript that doesn’t display correctly. No matter how often you report it, nothing gets fixed. Besides that, despite passing the JLPT, grammar and sentences in these levels don’t match the real tests. After passing N4, I still could barely understand most of what was in the N4 material here. Although I liked the idea, it’s just not an effective study app.

I have passed JLPT N3 already and am now trying to refresh my memory of it. Bought the lifetime plan and lemme tell yall— it is soooo worth it. You basically don’t need to bring a textbook everywhere just to learn the grammar rules bc they're all in this app. And these are the exact same rules I learned when I was studying for N3! Current also learning Spanish and it has been so helpful and precise. This and duolingo are a good combination. Only critique tho is that some texts that explain the grammar rules are a bit off.

Bunpo has excellent grammar explanations and lessons, with a slick user interface. I would give it 5/5, but there’s one major problem: the app is locked in portrait mode on iPad. If you use a keyboard case, this obviously makes it awkward and inconvenient to use. If they were to enable landscape view, it would be far more usable on iPad.

Users with an iPad and keyboard cannot use this app because it appears sideways. A physical keyboard is the fastest way to progress through lessons so we should definitely have this option. You don’t have to implement a UI redesign, just let the portrait-style app shrink and rotate so it appears properly in landscape mode on iPads.

The app is overall good. Has all the grammar needed, and explains it well. But! The sentence examples are so outlandish for no reason, for example; “ I don’t fall in love with you just because you can play the guitar” or “I hope I can return to earth safely”. These examples are really a waste of time and need to be changed. It’s extremely wasteful to have these type of examples instead or helpful, or real world examples.

I always take notes on ipad but i cant because it did not support split screen. However the conntent is very useful
