This application is a multilingual Japanese dictionary that does not require an internet connection.
Imiwa? was created using the amazing JMdict files from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group based on the work of Jim Breen on the EDICT project.
While some definitions are available in 4 languages (English, French, Russian and German), only the English translation is guaranteed for all entries in the JMDict dictionary. Initiate a search in any of those 4 languages, in Japanese or in romaji and imiwa? will do the rest.
imiwa? Also includes a rich database of kanji (KanjiDic), examples (from tatoeba.org) and conjugations as well as tools suitable for beginners.
Use the Traditional Chinese character recognition keyboard included in the iOS system for drawing kanji on screen.

Built on solid foundations
I was using JWP on the PC decades ago, which incorporated the amazing EDICT electronic dictionary developed by Jim Breen of Monash University. Imiwa? is also built around the same dictionary and is therefore also excellent. In these times of always-on internet access, it’s so refreshing to have an offline language app like this. I just hope it gets updated again as it’s been dormant for a few years now.
Beware: Security issue, steals your clipboard data
Great app, but since updating to the latest iOS, I notice that whenever I open the app, it says ‘imiwa? pasted from WhatsApp’ etc. Seems to be surreptitiously copying private information from your clipboard like TikTok was caught doing. What does the developer have to say? What’s being done with all this harvested information?
Simply superb
I have been using this gem of an app for years. It’s powerful, complete, easy to use, and full of essential features. Well done and highly recommend.
A must for Japanese learners
I’ve been using this app since I started learning Japanese nearly 5 years ago. I can’t fault it. It gives multiple suggestions for the word you want to find and tells you all the information you’d ever want to know about every individual kanji - stroke order and count, JLPT level, kun and onyomi; the works. A great study aid and an even more trusty companion during my 2 years in Japan.
Ok but...
When I go into setting it refuses to let me turn off other languages. They do this by putting out of the reach of the screen. Please fix this.
Also it’s not very good for learning Japanese so much as it is for searching for Japanese words.
But still ok.
Great app
I find this so useful. Especially when I realised that if you select the Chinese keyboard on iPhone, you can just draw kanji and it looks them up
I’d be lost without it!
I’ve been studying Japanese for four years now, and Imiwa is invaluable to me. Everything from the different verb forms to the order of Kanji writing is so helpful. A must for anyone learning Japanese!
The best if not, best in top 5
I just love it. Many thanks to its kind developer
Sort by A-Z function
Amazing app and I’ve been using it for about three years now. I’ve saved thousands of words! Could you add a ‘sort by A-Z’ function for saved vocabulary please? That would save having to do so by hand.
Thank you and keep up the great work!

Edit:
Also, I’d like there to be a search bar in the ‘my notes’ section so I can find a specific note quicker. Please and thank you!
Love it
Used this for years and absolutely love it. Friendly interface. Lots of options when searching for a word or phrase and they all load really quickly. Different ways to find specific kanji. Great for practising verb endings too. Some words aren’t exactly right when compared to a native speaker but from my experience, it seems to be just a few obscure words. Love this app and intend to download it on future phones too
