imiwa?

Japanese dictionary

Veröffentlicht von: Pierre-Philipp di Costanzo

Beschreibung

This application is a multilingual Japanese dictionary that does not require an internet connection.
Imiwa? was created using the amazing JMdict files from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group based on the work of Jim Breen on the EDICT project.
While some definitions are available in 4 languages (English, French, Russian and German), only the English translation is guaranteed for all entries in the JMDict dictionary. Initiate a search in any of those 4 languages, in Japanese or in romaji and imiwa? will do the rest.
imiwa? Also includes a rich database of kanji (KanjiDic), examples (from tatoeba.org) and conjugations as well as tools suitable for beginners.
Use the Traditional Chinese character recognition keyboard included in the iOS system for drawing kanji on screen.

So close to perfection

The app is incredible. The formatting is amazing- and the sentence analyzer is something I’ve never seen before. It’s so wonderful to just copy paste and look at a sentence and save the words you don’t understand. High praises to the developer. This can’t have been easy, and it’s seriously so incredible. That said, I find there are two things that keep it from being the best Japanese dictionary. 1. No option to show pitch accent. Pitch accent is a major part of Japanese, and Japanese dictionaries (and others) have it listed. The data is there, but the option to show it is not. 2. No way easy way export to Anki. Takaboto on Android spoiled me with how easy it was to send flash cards over. Imiwa is currently (at least on my phone) incapable of even sending or saving tab separated words. The first problem is clearly a bigger deal than the second. But if these two things were possible, this app would crush all JE, EJ dictionaries.

I absolutely love this app

I've been IB using this app since middle school! It's one of the best Japanese learning aids ever! If you are rusty and just need a little practice or reminders here or there It's perfect! ❤️

I’ve been using this app for 10 years now and it has always been an invaluable asset. The interface is clean and intuitive, I’ve never encountered any bugs, and it has every feature I’ve ever needed.

So much fun!

I’ve been using this app since I started taking Japanese classes 5 years ago. I love how each word comes with example sentences and different readings! I used to read the example sentences and guess the translations as a fun way to learn new words. Also in the search bar it predicts other combinations using that particular kanji, including old sayings and metaphorical phrases. It’s been a solid tool in my language learning and I highly recommend to anyone who’s learning Japanese!

The best Japanese dictionary but…

Why is the app size so huge??!!??? I’ve been using this app for maybe a decade now, because it is the best one as a Japanese learner. But it’s always had the one same flaw- ginormous app size, nearing 1gb. This is inexcusable, for a dictionary app of all things. I may have slightly more phone space than I did 10 years ago, but this still is a pain in the butt, and imiwa is still the largest app on my phone (!). If you need help with optimization, seriously, please reach out, I know folks that could help with this and this would be the one thing that makes imiwa perfect. :(

Extremely helpful

For a Japanese dictionary this app is probably the most helpful I have encountered. I especially like that it can guide you through the stroke order of Kanji. If you’re learning Japanese this is definitely a great app to have in the back pocket!

This Japanese dictionary is the best! I’ve been using it off and on for at least 8 years, it’s never failed. Whenever I wanted to know what a Japanese word meant, this never failed to deliver! Or if I wanted to know how to say something in Japanese, さすけね!

It’s the best app ever and IT DOESNT COLLECT ANY OF YOUR DATA!! Every other app does and it’s so weird!! I’m so glad this app doesn’t collect unnecessary data to sell me anything. And it has amazing features, the best dictionary app for sure

Daily use for a decade+

Love this app, it even got me a wife and a few great friends. Wondering if there's any chance of supporting exporting favorites lists/history out to flashcards apps like Anki and Wanikani.
