Doesn’t do what is claimed
I desperately wanted this browser to work.
Until now I’d been setting up family devices with brave browser as it was the only iOS browser that could consistently and properly block ads even on tricky websites such as YouTube. The problem with brave is the crypto nonsense which nobody wants and other annoyances as well as no support for third party extensions.
Orion seemed to tick all the boxes for me with claims to block YouTube ads as well as support for third party extensions and no insane crypto nonsense.
First impressions were very good with a clean customisable interface. The documentation was clear and I had no problem adding custom filter lists to the built in blocker.
Sadly it abruptly took a turn for the worse when it was unable to block even basic google banner ads on many websites even when I enabled every single one of the default block lists which caused my phone to become red hot even loading a barebones news site. It couldn’t block YouTube ads with any combination of the default block lists or even after installing a third party extension. Websites that load with no problem on Brave had ad block detector warnings that couldn’t be bypassed even with adding custom filter lists or third party extensions.
This browser simply doesn’t work and I couldn’t install it on my own device let alone a family device. I don’t think they should make false claims about being able to block YouTube video ads when it couldn’t even block YouTube text ads in the search results with every single default blocklist turned on. This listing in the App Store needs a big “BETA” banner on it as well as removing the misleading claims.
Customization
I think Orion is the best browser for iOS when it comes to customization and extensions
YouTube ads not blocked after UD
The app operated flawlessly but now on YouTube I have to kinda wait till the “skipping sequence is done” which was never a thing before the update.
This was before the update.
The “play in the background” feature for the YouTube is great but if I pause the video and exit the app, please don’t start play because I have manually stopped the video to do something.
Overall the app was great before the update but it’s now got a bit of a downgrade.
Resin for one star is I’m sick and tired of so called “updates” just to make the app worse.
It might add security features etc which is great but please consider upgrade or keep the UI at the same time
Decent browser
I mainly use this browser for YouTube premium with sponsor block. However on my iPad Air M2 i have the occasional issue where videos will play but only with sound and the video is just the thumbnail. If that happens i have to refresh the page 6 or more times for the video to finally play properly. Another issue I get is occasionally the extensions do not load with the page and I again need to refresh the page a few times for the extensions to load regardless of if it’s a Firefox addon or Chrome extension. Despite the reoccurring issues, I’d still rather use this browser than the YouTube app.
Great at blocking ads!
I wish there was an option to translate the webpage to English and other languages. Otherwise it’s great at blocking ads, intuitive and the support for plugins is awesome!
Significant issues
It doesn’t really work as a daily driver for browsing as it has some substantial bugs; the back and forward buttons frequently don’t do anything, and the favicons and titles of tabs don’t update correctly, meaning I’ll think I’m visiting tab A and I’ll actually go to tab B.
I like the layout though, I think it has potential once the issues are ironed out.
It has all the features I need very good app and it uses extensions which isn’t normal
This app has the five features that I really wanted over browsers some of them already have it first support for chrome and Firefox extensions. This is not in Safari. It’s not even on chrome or Firefox or brave. Second feature built anti-tracking protection only this browser has it third feature support for more than one extension the other way I found did not work and it would only let me use one extension. I can’t remember what they were called, monitoring monitoring is not included in any web browsers. The last feature is when I leave the page because sometimes I just want to follow along with tech tutorials.
Used to be good
The orion app used to be very good but not anymore. Extension support is poor at best, the content blocker simple doesn’t work . I am very disappointed i think since new year or shortly before update .
Fast but new bug since recent update
Recent update seems to have broken the ability to open links from shortcuts via other apps.
So for example. Orion is set as the default browser and has one tab open (google.com), app is closed
When I browse another app, such as Reddit or YouTube, tapping on a hyperlink, I'd expect Orion to open a new tab and the URL to be loaded. Instead, the current tab opens and nothing happens.
The only way I've found which temporarily fixes this is to make sure all tabs are closed, then hyperlinks open properly albeit temporarily before the issue repeats itself. Only started happening in the most recent version
Great aspirations and values but at most a beta
I’ve been using Orion as my daily driver on both macOS and iOS for a couple of months now right after subscribing to the devs’ other project, Kagi. I want to support independent browsers and I want to have extensions on iOS, but the app is too unstable atm. I’m fine with a few bugs on a desktop app, but on a smaller screen they become too much of an annoyance. Things that made me stop using it : tabs from previous session will randomly either disappear/close or turn blank, i.e the tabs are there but now open all on the “start page”; most extensions don’t really work; the sync when it works is incredibly slow (I know the devs say this is due to iCloud sync, but other browsers do it better, so it’s painful to get used to); I use my phone browser only when away from my main machine, and often I just need to quickly open something so that I can continue on the other machine. With Orion I find that most of the time I’m having to airdrop stuff or add stuff to reminders to make sure they don’t disappear which ruins the seamless experience of other browsers. I’ll keep using the macOS app and I’m hoping that the devs get enough support to make it better
