It’s a fundamentally well designed password manager. Plenty of useful features and tools. UX and recognising credential inputs could be better. Confident that it will only get better.

An Excellent Password Manager with One Flaw

I was in the market for a password manager that works across platforms without compromising on the security and features I’ve grown accustomed to. Proton Pass is a relatively new player in the space, but it comes from Proton, a company well-known for its focus on privacy and security. Installation was simple. I set it up on Safari and a Chromium-based browser, and both extensions worked flawlessly. The user interface is clean and intuitive, making navigation and management of passwords a pleasant experience. One of the standout perks is the free version, which offers two vaults, unlimited passwords, and support for unlimited devices—a fantastic deal for anyone looking to avoid subscription fees. However, my enthusiasm was dampened when I realised that Proton Pass shares its login credentials with Proton Mail. While you can set an additional master password for Proton Pass, the implementation is frustrating. If you log out of Proton Mail, you’re automatically logged out of Proton Pass too. This creates a convoluted system where you must either remember two master passwords or risk being locked out entirely. What’s more concerning is the security implication. Without adding an exclusive password for Proton Pass, anyone who hacks your Proton Mail account gains full access to your vault, exposing every password, secure note, and sensitive document you’ve stored. I really liked Proton Pass but accessing it using the same credentials as Proton Mail concerns me. Unless this changes, I won’t be using it.

Solid password manager. Room for improvement

I took the opportunity to buy lifetime access with the Black Friday deal. It’s a steal! I’ve been a 1Password and Fastmail user for years and I’m happy with the products. What I’m not happy with is the pricing. Migrating across from 1Password to Pass was straightforward. Export and import. I had a few files and loyalty cards in 1Password that Pass does not support. So a few manual efforts but nothing much. A few passkeys as well (but this is expected given how they work). One of the not so simple things to figure out in Pass was email aliasing. After some searching and reading help articles I come to learn I need to go straight to SimpleLogin to manage aliases and mailboxes. Not so simple. I’m looking forward to better integration in the future. Another feature missing in Pass is “large reveal password” that shows the password and its associated index number. I really need this feature since sadly a few services I use still use this bad practice. Overall, it’s good an no blockers on my moving across. Will update my review when I find, think of new features, or when fixes to the above might get done. Thank you.

was great, now broken

edit: I just had a developer response to the email asking me to check my password and get in touch if theres still a problem. Insulting... particularly given thats the first thing any normal person would do... more so given they dont respond to support requests. yay... first you keep forcing me to log back into my email for no reason, now proton pass freezes each time i load a password. if I want to load another then I have to restart it. How do I know you're not going to lock me out of proton pass if I update? and how do you expect a password reset to work when you lock someone out of their email... the same email you send the pw to? luckily I have another device that you haven't forced me to log back into. note Im using peotonpass and strangely the passwords don't seem to work any more for proton mail. how long before I lose everything? these guys were great, now I'm regretting ever getting a subscription and given previous updates Im worried about updating 🙄

421 HTTP error code

The IOS app is the worst product I have seen from proton, always get 421 error code when I need it the most. Regret my decision paying for a yearly subscription

Seems OK

I am a current 1Password subscriber and was looking to amalgamate my manager/email etc. As I already use Proton Mail, I imported my 1Password info into Proton Pass. That went surprisingly well. However, the deal breaker for me and what is stopping me moving over to Proton Pass 100%, is that there currently is no Safari extension. This seems to be a major oversight at this time. Until there is on, I am back to using 1Password. Proton is missing a big trick here.

It’s a sort-of Password Manager

It will generate a strong, random - or otherwise, password for you…… which you then have to store somewhere else. Seriously??!!! Who writes this stuff?! It’s the thought that counts, I guess.

App well designed, easy to navigate

Safe, great backup system, with alerts in case of data bridges. Just like my email and Proton calendar the Password App is the best for me.

Just Don’t!!

1 hour in I wanted to use a generated password to secure my account, upon doing so it deleted all my passwords id previously added. Waste of time and they want £60 for that bolocks. Not trusting anything from these jokers. Wouldn’t even lock a sandwich with them.

Improving - just add Passkey Login!

App is getting there! Just add passkeys to log into ProtonPass and I am golden. 2x Yubikey Passkey Devices + Recovery Code = Most Secure Proton Login One more thing.. the password generator needs easier access and more options. I use to to generate passwords for other people (so copy and paste) so it’s good but not as good as LastPass for example.
