Shell Recharge

Other than requiring a credit card and a $10 balance to use the app (charges for paid stations) it works great for me. I normally just use a free one near my grocery store. I can see how much my car charges and can go when my time is up.

So to start charging it’s about 10 minutes of bureaucracy. Ridiculous. I get to a charging point at a local shopping center, it asked me to download this app I have to create an account. OK fine, but I can’t use sign in with Apple or Google or anything. On my iPhone it doesn’t even let me properly generate a strong password using my phones built-in password generator. For payment information, I have to enter in my credit card by hand. I can’t scan it, I can’t use Apple Pay.

Shell is a perfect example of a poorly designed system. An out of the way station. No signage for the chargers. Had to hunt around the station to find them. Practically no instruction at the charger. Entered the data for two different credit cards which are current and valid. App reported an error with both when trying to initiate charge. Bottom line is Shell took our money but did not provide the service. Not hard to imagine a gas company trying to dissuade the use of EVs. This is to be avoided at all costs if you value your time and sanity.

I deleted this app about as fast as I downloaded it. They make you load money ($10 minimum) on an in-app wallet and won’t refund you for any unused credits. - Way too much friction and hassle just to use a charger one time.

Worked wel and easy and didn’t cost a lot

This is the worst app I have ever used since iPhone5. Way to many bugs, unable to charge. Stuck at processing, expect to spend 5-10 minutes at the station every time u charge. And be thankful if the app and charge station works.

I live in a condo building that happens to have a Shell Recharge station. The station hardware seems to be fine for the most part but it is frequently unusable because the software is so bad. Frequent outages mean when I go to plug in my car its a coin toss whether the app will work or whether it will give me a generic error like “error, something isn’t working” and not charge my car. When I call the support staff they are never aware of any problems even though there’s clearly some kind of outage preventing iOS users or all users in general from using the app. Sometimes the phone rep can start the charge remotely after waiting on hold for 30 minutes and other times they can’t. Sometimes the charge rep says they have no idea anything is broken then it mysteriously starts working while I’m on the phone (meaning something is probably getting rebooted on Shell’s side without the rep telling me the details). Overall inconsistent service means you never know when you can charge your car. I wish we had ChargePoint instead.

As title says, I’ve had to reinstall this app several times because it breaks spontaneously and Shell’s official advice is to reinstall the app. There is no fix for this and it happens randomly.

Start charge? Error! Log out? Error! Log in? Error! Refresh? Error! I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app a dozen times but to no avail. It’s a dumpster fire.

Really needed this app for an EV rental in Europe. I only see chargers in North America, none in Europe. Since I could never check the rates I charged blindly and will wait for the bill.
