Great, except…
…I can’t sync with my Proton account because to do that I need the 2FA code. And I can’t see that because it’s in the app that’s asking for the 2FA code. I’m sure there’s a way, but what a silly circle

Wanted to switch to Proton’s ecosystem fully as I bought the family plan last week but was worried about having all my eggs in one basket by using this authenticator. Turns out that iCloud syncing means I can still get my codes from my Mac or phone without logging into my Proton account, eliminating that worry whilst keeping the convenience of grabbing codes from a Mac app. Took me 2 hours to switch from Authy but very much worth it!
The app does more or less what you need & let me get off an alternate product. It would benefit from a few refinements. I’m sure it will get there. It is reordering my keys still for some reason. Suggestions. - Password to encrypt/decrypt export/import. - Folders for keys to be grouped. - When keys are not shown, double tap to show for 30sec ? - Compact view by icon screen.
I fully acknowledge that proton often releases apps that only work on one platform, or that have minor bugs. To be expected I guess, but this one fails at the basics. Security professionals already found issues, and it can’t even sync across your proton accounts. So for the time being it can not be used until basic functionality is restored. They are aware of these issues, I write this review now as the app has just been updated and nothing has changed
Whilst I still think this app needs a little more tweaking I’ve been amazed at the support. I opened a ticket with Proton saying I was having trouble importing batches of accounts from Google Authenticator and it was fixed in under a day. If the other minor problems are fixed as quickly this will be a 5 star app in no time.
I read the previous reviews, thought I would give this one a miss. However I really wanted to move away from Google Authenticator, and get redundancy across devices. Downloaded the app on Linux desktop, imported from Google Authenticator with ease, signed into proton to sync. Downloaded 1.1.3 for iOS, worked like a charm. I’m really sold on the proton ecosystem, going all in on subscription!
Update v1.1.3 - login issue now appears to be resolved for iPad version. Original: A key piece of functionality is the ability to ensure codes are saved and shared between devices. Unfortunately as others have said, this doesn’t work, making this part of the app useless.
Update to the Update: Thank goodness, the latest update to v1.1.3 seems to cured the ‘log in to sync across devices’ issue. Also entries also appear alphabetised too. Only thing left for me to complain about is the truncated name. Please shorten it so it isn’t truncated. Call it Authenticator, for example. Thanks. Update: Even this latest update [1.1.2] does not correct this issue. I have contacted support, send a screen recording and also the logs but still doesn’t;t work. I am now giving up on this. It;s not fit for purpose and I am sure NOT going to store my valuable codes in it as it stands as I cannot risk them being deleted, As my previous review seems to have gone AWOL, I will post again. To enable ‘Sync Across Devices’ you need to either log into with your existing Proton account or create a free one. This is where my problems start. Using my Proton credentials to log into, it just drops back to the login screen. Even after accepting that my username/password are correct. Same applies if I create a free account. Enter my details and when I try to log into i just drops back to the login screen in screen. I must say that this only happens on both my Mac and iPad. I can log into OK with my iPhone which makes it even weirder. Another issue is with the ordering of the 2FA codes. You cannot alphabetise them and they seem to change order randomly too! I really want to like this app but for me it still seems like we are beta, or alpha, testers at the moment. Why does this review never appear? It says 12 reviews but doesn’t list that many.
Actually a little shocking that Proton would release an app that has such fundamental issue and appears to be somewhat wid spread based on early reviews. I’m sure the app is going to be fine… once I can actually access it.
As an Unlimited subscriber this release falls way short of the expectations. I guess it does the job but the UI is horrible and weirdly misaligned with the rest of Proton’s design language, no encrypted exports, no way of reordering entries (let me do alphabetical!) and no pinning to the top. I’d also like for entries to be waaaay more compact so it fits more in a single screen and it’s easier to read, and to be able to tag entries (see Ente Auth). C’mon, Proton! I’ll revise this review later if things change.
