Description

"It’s kind of like the Garage Band of coding." – Wired
"Codea for iPad is a super slick way to write and run programs on your iPad." – Gizmodo
Codea lets you create games and simulations — or just about any visual idea you have. Turn your thoughts into interactive creations that make use of iPad features like Multi-Touch and the accelerometer.
We think Codea is the most beautiful code editor you'll use, and it's easy. Codea is designed to let you touch your code. Want to change a color, or an image? Tapping will bring up visual editors that let you choose exactly what you want.
Codea is built on the Lua programming language. A simple, elegant language that doesn't rely too much on symbols — a perfect match for iPad.
Here's how you use it: type your code. Press play to watch it run. Interact with it. Get creative.

Codea Reviews

Pretty awkward, poorly documented and buggy

Reviewingreviewable. on

United Arab Emirates

As well as having no text user input features, it has bugged out pretty pathetically before, failing to even display a sprite on the screen. The class system that is exclusive to Codea's Lua is poorly documentated, which is frustrating. Though probably the worst thing is how terribly awkward the coding is, lacking an undo button, having an overwhelming amount of little options that are supposed to help you, though fail to operate usefully. All in all, pretty poor, though it does have some positive points such as (though uncommented) examples and the main reason why one would buy this app: there aren't many other apps like this.

Best IDE on the AppStore

KryptoKizik on

I'm a long time user of Pythonista on iOS, I was sad to see it become mostly abandonware over the last few years. However, the eventual death of Pythonista led to the discovery of Codea. Now Python and LUA are vastly different languages with very different audiences but if you love to code you to learn to adapt. That is the only place Codea falls short compared to Pythonista. Documentation and the organization of that documentation. I understand Two Lives Left is an independent studio with a small team and I have nothing but praises for them. But, a LOT of users are going to need good, easy to follow docs with examples of how this engine works to properly get the hang of it.... Myself included.... Honestly calling Codea an engine makes a LOT more sense than calling it an IDE. Sure it's an IDE but it is also a renderer, handles all animation, shaders and so on. This is defold for iOS with some platform specific handcuffs thanks to iOS. The community is strong, responsive, extremely friendly and helpful and only a click away from within the app. Well done there. This helps fill the void from confusing docs. Best money I've ever spent in the AppStore, without a doubt.

Tried to get StarSceptre and other games listed on the Codea.io website only to be told they are not available on the AppStore. The only available one is CargoBot. What’s going on? Getting 404s for website.

money theft, not useful for devs 🤮 I’ll contact apple to get my money back, It does not support any programming languages It's just a pixel game development. 😭 ‌”Robot Mania: Physics Sandbox” is Much better and free. waste of money.

One of the best purchases I’ve made

HashDankHog on

United States

I have A lot of coding apps on my IPad but I never use any of them except this one because they cannot match it in its ease of use and versatility. I bought and used this on a roadtrip to Texas and the lessons Ive learned then still help me code in many different programming languages. This is probably the most fully featured development suite I’ve ever worked with, You have almost full access to the iPad and can make whatever you want. It is a Steep price but I cannot believe how well made this app is

Long time user: Please let us pay you MORE!

1) I've been using Codea for years... and years... and *years*. Started on the original iPad (yes: iPad generation 1). Now I'm on an M1 iPad Pro. That's a long time, my friends. / 2) I paid once and have benefitted from all the updates. Where's the benefit for *you*? / 3) Developer: I rarely say this, but you should charge more. Or add optional subscriptions for those of us who want to keep supporting the app. Give us the option to pay $100/year, and I'll be the first to sign up. (Provide options for $20/year, $50/year, $75/year, $100/year... and more?) / 4) I've never felt so NOT ripped off in all my App Store life. Codea hasn't just been fun; it's helped me through periods of horrible depression. Lua plus game development on a tablet? Beautiful. / 5) Couldn't ask for more. Every one of these five stars was earned.

10+ years no tutorials - horrible

Lost in Tactics on

United States

Truly perplexes me, how you can have a product out this long, (10+ years) and still not try to elevate potential new comers. I have looked at your Twitter, YouTube channels and I noticed… your quick to put up so much stuff on Unity, and other things.. Except.. not once have you guys decided: hey let’s look out for the Codea beginners. Let’s create some simple 15 min tutorial (in 5 minute chunks) showing how to create a: • simple platformer scene • simple Zelda scene • simple moving shapes • simple info graphs • simple (anything) Ai is making its way into apps, someone will create an engine like this and include Ai… and you guys will be in a survival match… For you did not bother to *build up* your beginners and inject fresh community members. I have lurked your forums and they are too far advanced. In your forums.. beginners need to know what to ask for to get proper help.. how is a beginner **supposed to know** what to ask for? That’s your job, to provide them an entrance using tutorials and such, and it seems, for the last 10 years you’ve been horrendous at it. Comes across to me, like you guys just want attention in your social media channels.. Instead of using those platforms to propagate the knowledge of the user base. Shaking my head. Good Luck, this decade seems to be the one to weed out lackadaisical templates such as yourself, and replace you with systems that truly want to advance the users and guide them to be creative, fruitful and productive - you are the complete opposite.
