Gaia GPS Reviews

Good, but!

RaamChamp on

I have really enjoyed using Gaia GPS, on my iPhone. It has great functionality and detailed views on the maps regardless of where I’m hiking. However, it will not work on my Apple Ultra I watch. Reached out for support and was just told “it won’t work on the ultra.” Okay, so be it, but now the price increase to 60.00/year! Too much for an app that’s not going to work as it should and the fact I can’t get answers from support.

It is crashing a lot lately

When editing/creating certain routes. It is starting to get annoying and inconvenient (for a $90/year app).

Can’t access other features. I’m done.

After being a long time paid user, support has been completely unhelpful in solving my access problem to Trailforks pro and outside+ which should be included with my Gaia premium subscription and linked to my account. Shame that such a good product was ruined by Outside.

Easy to use, great offline features

Stingingrog3r on

This is a great tool for offline backpackers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts with an easy to use interface. I used the app and purchased a subscription for the offline features since I was going on a weeklong journey in the Montana Wilderness and wanted to keep track of my location without needing a map and compass. It offered great features on the desktop version that allowed me to make a detailed track to follow that included elevation gain and milage. I put specific locations for campsites and possible water stops along the way. While following the trail, it was surprisingly accurate to where I was and offered several topographic map styles, each varying in download size. I was also able to share the map with my partner before the trip so he'd know what to expect. Overall, seeing the map drawn out put the whole journey into perspective of how deep in the Wilderness we were. I would highly recommend it for anyone in a similar situation.

Starts up in background

Saygmo on

On latest iOS I kept getting the notification of something using gps in the background. This after force quitting the app, and only giving it permissions to use the gps while running, and even turning off background app refresh. Unacceptable. The app itself is decent, was using as a supplement to TrailsOffroad but not if it won’t stop using the gps ALL THE TIME.

Long time fan, now I’m done

Value for money simply isn’t there any longer. Outside has ruined this app and opened the door for competition. I’ll take my money to the competitors

Almost tripled the price

Suddenly, a subscription renewal went from $29 for a year to $84. Good luck with that, ya greedy goofballs.

‼️Warning‼️

Last year, I cancelled, but months later they automatically billed my checking acc., anyways. So, just now I discovered they plan on charging me again this year! after supposedly correcting the error last year‼️

Terrible

Horrible Apple car play interface and they’ve gotten stupid expensive. Buggy and app crashes. There are better options out there.

Maps are Good - Offline Use Not So Much

sansfoi on

United States

I’ve used Gaia for a number of years and generally am satisfied with the interface and ability to plan trips on a desktop browser. But the downloading of offline maps is horrendous. Just absolutely awful in almost every way. First of all, it takes ages. We’re talking hours, days maybe, for a couple hundred megabytes of data. That much data should take a few seconds by today’s data transfer standards. But to make matters worse, the feedback you get from the app is unreliable at best. It’s just very difficult to know for sure if your download is even happening at all, let alone when it might complete. So you’re out traveling, maybe you haven’t downloaded every leg of your trip yet because of storage space or a flexible itinerary. You know you’re about to go out of service and need to get that next map section. What do you do? Sit in a truck stop for a few hours, a few days, hoping that data comes through? Pitiful.
