Ivory for Mastodon by Tapbots Reviews
Control your social media
Ivory is a great app for Mastodon. It’s user friendly, remembers where you left off, and has quite a few customizable options if you are interested. I really enjoy using Mastodon with Ivory. It’s a social media app that gives you control over what you want to see without any corporate addiction algorithms.
Pleasant app
Does most of what i want. It does seem a little reticent to update if i have not opened it for a while: hitting the home button will take me to the top of my feed, but then pulling down to refresh will show me many more posts. Then i can pull down to refresh a second or even a third time, and it will find hundreds more new posts each time. Can you make it so double tapping the home button does a complete refresh, and gets all the new posts, instead of just some of them?
Excellent App, Great devs!
It is rock solid, fast, and the devs are very responsive. I sent a suggestion via email and the app changed within a week. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I don’t believe it is. The developers are paying attention to their users — which is better than 90% of my experiences on the App Store.
Great, but missing one critical feature
If one feature were added, I would re-subscribe. "short right swipe" should have an option to "outdent", "de-focus", not sure what to call it.
When you tap a single toot, it focuses that message, and you see replies to that message. I want to be able to swipe right to go out a level, and undo the focus that I did when I tapped the toot.
Bluesky has this, the old twitter app had (probably has) this. It sounds nit-picky, but I unsubscribed because I can't stand not having this.
Too Buggy for the Price
There is a lot to like about Ivory, but I cannot recommend it.
More than a year ago, I reported a bug to the devs: Native Mastodon filters are ignored when viewing lists. This is *still* not fixed & it’s really not acceptable for an app that charges a premium subscription price just to use it.
Additionally, it’s still missing basic features found in other Mastodon apps that are free or offer a one time purchase (e.g., grouped notifications).
Suggestion
Having been a long-time user of Tweetbot, I was not surprised to find a highly polished app that reduces the native UI friction. Like to see a block option though.
Slow, jerky scrolling
Lovely interface, very well crafted, but scrolling through posts is very slow. I’ve used a mouse with a scroll wheel, a Magic Trackpad, and the page up/down keys, and in each of those cases, scrolling through the feed made it feel like I was wading through mud.
Oddly, the iOS version of the app feels fluid and smooth
No syncing
Syncing has been hit or miss on both iOS and macOS. Refreshing the feed doesn’t do anything.
Mastodon-only
Great client, I’ve always loved Tapbots designs. But Ivory obstinately refuses to recognize servers that aren’t the Mastodon codebase, even though other clients work perfectly well with them. This is fine for the vast majority of users, but I’ve sadly had to cancel my subscription.
Love the App, but…
I love the app on iPhone, iPad, and especially Mac. I’d love a full featured version on Apple Vision though. Right now, the iPad version is used, but the Mac multi-column feature would be ideal.
