Since Joon! My kids are eager to do their chores and they’re pleading for me to add new ones to their list.
I was really apprehensive about this app at first. My first initial thoughts were that ‘gamifying’ my kids’ tasks would be encouraging my kids to seek rewards for every small aspect of their lives rather than teaching them perseverance. Or this app would just be one more app that was novel at first but would wear off quickly. I was very wrong. First thing I must say, is that I signed up for this app out of desperation. Both of my kids have been diagnosed with ADHD and with them getting older they were starting to feel unmanageable. I was so tired of trying to motivate them and I desperately did not want to medicate them. I made them elaborate checklists and did everything I could to get them to follow a routine. They would do okay with things for a short time and then go back to being resistant and oppositional. I love them dearly and was getting tired of trying to negotiate everything or explain why things were important. So I thought I would try this app. I can say that this app is very well designed. It’s simple to use and doesn’t require a ton of effort once you’ve set up the initial tasks. You get lots of great options for creating tasks. How it limits the kids to do their tasks before they can use the game or purchase rewards is also truly genius. I was worried that it would make my kids super reward focused, but it doesn’t really. It’s simple in that they just earn coins and use those coins to spend in the game or purchase rewards like going to play with friends or having screen time. It’s just a more complex version of First-Then. And the results with my kids have been fantastic! I’m not even sure exactly what has made them change so quickly and dramatically. I think it’s just they they are able to see the results of what they are doing. I honestly don’t know, but they are calmer and more regulated than they have ever been. I was also worried that it wouldn’t stick and my kids would get bored of it and go back to their old ways, but they are still actually doing well with it after six weeks so far. They have even stopped fighting with each other so much. It’s mind blowing! This app has really worked for my kids. I wouldn’t call it a cure all, but it definitely has created a lot more harmony in our home and is steadily improving my kids’ regulation. I still have difficulties with certain things at times, but as I’ve gotten better at using the app’s features I have learned to tweak certain things that are getting us results. I really love that
My son is so proud of his chores now, he even asked for more and we barter on how many coins he gets. He’s getting a solid understanding of effort and reward. Some days it’s still hard to motivate him but on those days I can remind him that if he doesn’t want to do the work he won’t have the coins to take care of his pets. He’s loving the app. We do it at bed time everyday.
This app is really easy to use and when I had questions at the start the replies were super fast from Brad (1 of the developers) There are a few changes I’d like to see on the parent side of the app but having it being so new there is room for improvement! Really handy that you can print the kids quests for a room visual and that you can set their screen time to only be used after quests are completed! I’m hopefully this is the solution for our family as I’m sick of sticker charts the the children are growing out of them! This app is extremely helpful in a reminding system for those struggling with executive functioning and being easily distracted!
We have been struggling to get our son who has ADHD and high functioning autismn to par-take in any task or thing we ask without a fight or huge meltdown. I was at my witts end and kept seeing the ads and thought why not. Brad had reached out to see how he could help and I finally took him up on it and thoughts let’s try things cannot get any worse! With the support of Brad I was able to get everything set up and working. My son ran to brush his teeth the first night as he saw he would get a reward. The next morning I had an early meeting and he did all his quests without anyone asking him to! I was blown away!!!! He loves to look after Mario and Moxie so far the characters he has created and likes to check in on them and tell others about them! Our mornings are vastly improved in the fact that I am not constantly asking him to put on clothes and get all his things together. What I think is really helping us is breaking it down into smaller quests- get dressed, daytime ears (cochlear implants), put on deodorant, eat your breakfast, put on socks! Adding your own quests and creating rewards makes it so customizable it has been great! When the coins add up the joy on his face is amazing! Our pediatrician even commented way to think outside the box! Thank you Joon team for coming up with this amazing tool! 🥰
My kids love it. I love it. Very customizable and parent friendly- there are conveniences added to make approving quests easy and not take forever when there are multiple. I love the reminders. It’s hard to compete with the other games my kids like to play when they don’t have anything to do with their pet, so a few more games within the app would be great. Maybe there are and we just haven’t found them yet. Anyway, a great app and helps remind my neurodivergent children of their tasks/routines/chores
The cost is prohibiting for the families who really need it. It’s a glorified start chart. Unless you upgrade to a paid account parents can only confirm so many quests a day which means their kids then have to pressure them to buy. That’s just sleezy marketing. The rewards feature is also annoying since you can cancel a reward for the child to exchange. My kid has complained that once you reach a certain lever you can only have one pet out, not three. And the quests are mostly “real” world tasks the kinds need to preform. If you don’t set most of them as non-mandatory, your kids consistency score will be low but if they don’t want to sweep everyday, for example, then they’ll never do it.
This has given my kids some motivation to complete the tasks we argue about every day and it’s a work in progress but the app is definitely helpful! Try like to collect the coins and see their banks grow
Since both my kids and I started using Joon, they both on a more positive path of doing regular routines daily. They both look forward to getting their tasks completed and playing the mini games available. Also, having the goals is encouraging enough for them to want to continue collecting points and doing even more things around the house. This app help them become way more helpful! I 100% recommend this app to anyone! At the beginning it was a bit confusing to navigate the games but the kids being kids figured it out, other then that, this app is awesome!!
