Description

Nihongo is an offline Japanese dictionary, flashcard app, and reading assistant, designed to make the best use of the time you dedicate to studying Japanese.

Our dictionary is made to find what you're looking for fast, with the words Japanese speakers actually use at the top of every search result, and every word marked as "common", "uncommon", or "rare".

"Clippings", our reading assistant, is what makes Nihongo stand apart from other dictionaries. Paste in Japanese text from a website, email, an eBook, or anywhere else, and we'll add furigana or romaji to every word. We also enable you to tap on any word to see its definition. This will truly change the way you read Japanese. And now, you can get the same experience right in Safari using our Safari extension.

Personal experience (as well as a good deal of research in second-language acquisition) has shown us that the words that you're most likely to remember are the words that you're encountering naturally. To this end Nihongo automatically draws from your search history and clippings to compile flashcard decks filled with words for which you already have context. This makes it easy to study both the words you looked up during Japanese class, and those that appear in your favorite song or videogame. And by adding notes to the back of flashcards you can further connect each vocabulary word to your personal contextual understanding.

Kanji flashcards prompt you to draw the missing kanji from the words you're studying, creating stronger connections between the characters and their real-world use. Built-in kanji decks give you 2 or 3 key words to study for each kanji.

This app is only possible because of the JMDict (edrdg.org) and Tatoeba (tatoeba.org) projects. I highly encourage you to support these incredible projects that make apps like Nihongo possible!

Perfect Dictionary

bwfuJP on

Not only does this app supply every possible word used in the japanese language, its breakdowns within each kanji can make it much easier for beginners to understand the meaning of each individual kanji and their pronunciations. The fact that this app works offline too is also amazing which means you can study whilst travelling. Especially if you are in Japan, the photo feature allows for you to take a picture of an unknown piece of japanese and it will instantly translate the japanese for you and give you a large breakdown on the words as well as the particles (only available on the paid version). Overall this app is a must have to say the least.

Brilliant

I've been using the Nihongo app for a while now, and it has become an indispensable tool in my Japanese language learning journey. This app deserves a full five stars for its incredible features and user-friendly interface. One standout feature of Nihongo is its "Clippings" function. It allows me to insert my own text into a file, enabling me to read along seamlessly. Whenever I get stuck on a word, I simply touch it to get the definition and see examples of the word used in sentences. This instant access to information greatly enhances my reading comprehension and makes learning more efficient. Another fantastic feature is the ability to add words to a flash deck. This is incredibly helpful for reinforcing vocabulary. The app includes pre-made flash decks for JLPT levels N5 to N1, which are perfect for structured study. The practice mode is intuitive and engaging, helping me retain new words better. Overall, Nihongo is a must-have for anyone serious about learning Japanese. It combines a robust dictionary, an interactive reading aid, and effective vocabulary practice tools all in one app. Highly recommended!

Best app for vocab whilst reading

olaframen on

Absolutely worth every penny and its so cheap! I just started reading books in Japanese and every time I use the dictionary it collates all my searches into a deck of words and then allows me to do SRS flashcard learning with them. Makes reading that much more effective in bettering my comprehension of the language. There was a bug with one of the updates which caused the sentences to not load properly; I reported it and they fixed it immediately. 10/10 will recommend this to everyone I know who is learning Japanese.

Very useful language app

Bananabreadkitty on

Easily the best free language app I’ve used. Even the free version offers comprehensive functionality.

Super helpful

I never write reviews on things, but as someone who’s learning Japanese this is the best app I’ve used like..ever. Not only does it teach you definitions of words, but also shows you the stroke order for the kanji, plus, it’s free, for the most part

Fantastic all-round Japanese app

arthur-san on

This is by far the best Japanese language app I’ve used. Unlike many other dictionaries, the example sentences are relevant and not some obscure text that is difficult to integrate with your studies. You can make, save and organise flashcard sets easily. You can import text, save and study any content within the app - or using the safari extension, online. There are pre-made kanji decks by JLPT or Japanese school year. And you can take photos of kanji and it will translate them. The depth of detail in the individual vocabulary entries is deep and, for about £8, you can add pitch accent patterns. The interface is intuitive and easy to use and navigate. I’ve paid up for a lifetime membership at a rate I think is a bargain. Thanks to the developer for producing such a brilliant app.

Invaluable Japanese learning app!

Kingrolls on

Absolutely invaluable learning tool for anyone studying or interested in Japanese. Really amazing features that I use literally everyday. I’d recommend this as the best dictionary/study combination app around, and I’ve used a lot over the last 10 years!

Really nice app!

Really nice interface, available offline (which is super helpful) and has really useful information like common/uncommon next the words which I think distinguish it well from other Japanese dictionary apps

The Best 日本語の辞書アプリ

Ril3y-L on

This is the beat Japanese Dictionary. The app is good that I’m even thinking of august suing 50 for the line time option. I might just do it to. This is an app which will be extremely useful for anyone that’s a at a stage of formulating sentences in Japanese and wants to begin learning kanji. For each word there are so many sentence examples. Plus you can search for particles, kanji symbols too where they even highlight all their different readings and then link it to words where it is found. Well done to the creators!

Great app, with one big issue ...

Tezza E on

The volume level seems to be preset, and there seems to be nothing I can do to make it louder. Please fix this!
