Description

Nihongo is an offline Japanese dictionary, flashcard app, and reading assistant, designed to make the best use of the time you dedicate to studying Japanese.
Our dictionary is made to find what you're looking for fast, with the words Japanese speakers actually use at the top of every search result, and every word marked as "common", "uncommon", or "rare".
"Clippings", our reading assistant, is what makes Nihongo stand apart from other dictionaries. Paste in Japanese text from a website, email, an eBook, or anywhere else, and we'll add furigana or romaji to every word. We also enable you to tap on any word to see its definition. This will truly change the way you read Japanese. And now, you can get the same experience right in Safari using our Safari extension.
Personal experience (as well as a good deal of research in second-language acquisition) has shown us that the words that you're most likely to remember are the words that you're encountering naturally. To this end Nihongo automatically draws from your search history and clippings to compile flashcard decks filled with words for which you already have context. This makes it easy to study both the words you looked up during Japanese class, and those that appear in your favorite song or videogame. And by adding notes to the back of flashcards you can further connect each vocabulary word to your personal contextual understanding.
Kanji flashcards prompt you to draw the missing kanji from the words you're studying, creating stronger connections between the characters and their real-world use. Built-in kanji decks give you 2 or 3 key words to study for each kanji.
This app is only possible because of the JMDict (edrdg.org) and Tatoeba (tatoeba.org) projects. I highly encourage you to support these incredible projects that make apps like Nihongo possible!

Highly resourceful!

BlueAngel365 on

I wanted to use more Japanese language apps to find the best one for optimized learning and I happen to stumble upon this app and I was blown away by how much information it has. This app is so helpful and highly resourceful for anyone looking to learn more Japanese and improve their language skills.

History and kanji phonetic/meaning breakdowns??!!

This app has surpassed my expectations. I’m never disappointed! I only wish I could with to the Home Screen and clear the search bar with one click! Otherwise, everything is amazing. Maybe custom flash cards, or phrase flash cards (probably could be covered by custom) !

Greatest Japanese Learning App

AeroJPN on

I use Nihongo Pro for Kanji, phrases, and rapid flashcard creation using the dictionary and even OCR of photos of Japanese that I come across. There are a lot of features that are great to have when you are trying to figure things out. This even has the ability to insert furigana on websites in Safari like Rikaichan! The latest update adds helpful context using the Kanji radicals, which I am glad to see! I combine this with his Lessons app derived from Jalup sentence packs for a complete learning suite. This system does a better job of preventing you from being overwhelmed with too many reviews when you fall behind as compared to other learning tools I have tried, which is the key selling point for me honestly, since that is what makes it hard to recover using other flashcard systems where you take off a few weeks and come back to thousands of reviews due. I wish I has this app many years ago. I recommend giving the trial a go to see if this flashcard learning system works for you!

The best

I bought the full version last year when I went to Japan the first time. I was already fluent in Mandarin Chinese as a second language, so I had some learning techniques that transferred well from using Pleco to this app. The design is great, pitch accents are included, lots of human voice recordings for words. I love it. The furigana Safari extension is awesome! I’ve never seen anything like that on mobile for Chinese. It’s so incredibly helpful. The full version is worth every penny! Things I’m excited for: Pitch accent markers in the search results list for quick reminders. Pitch accent markers in generated flash cards. Being able to search for a sentence or phrase in the regular dictionary lookup tab (without adding it to clippings).

Difficult to manage flash cards

I just wish there was a method for me to easily copy and paste cards from one deck into another

Lifetime purchase doesn’t include all features

I think it’s lame lifetime purchase doesn’t include pitch accents. This is a free feature in other free to use apps. Also there is no way to include example phrases from the dictionary into the flashcards.

excellent app

the function that split a sentence into words helps me a lot.

does it really cost money to use a basic feature like practicing flash cards? you’re kidding right.

Excellent app for learning vocab and kanji

Collin Angell on

I’ve been a lifetime subscriber of this app for several years now, and the value of this app has paid for itself many times over. The offline dictionary is superb. The spaced-repetition flashcard decks are excellent ways to memorize new vocabulary. While I’m playing a game or watching an anime in Japanese, it’s so easy to just look up the word, then add it to a new flashcard deck. Then, once I learn the words, it goes in my big ol’ review pile that helps me burn the words into my memory. The app also has pre-built Kanji decks organized by Grade level and JLPT level, which are excellent decks to learn the kanji themselves and common words to go with each kanji. I’m currently working through the High School level Kanji now. I never use the Clippings feature, so don’t have anything to say on it. I would give this app 5 stars, but there are some nitpicks I have that I would love to see addressed. First, as far as I can tell, there isn’t a way to create a flashcard for Kanji that are not in the pre-built decks. I’d like to be able to add Kanji cards to my custom decks just like regular words. In the same vein, the JLPT N1 kanji deck still needs to be completed. Second, some more statistical features, like how many words/kanji I have at each level, would be awesome to have, so I can keep track of my progress. Third, the AI voice pronunciations for a lot of words (albeit uncommon/rare ones) are really bad, and occasionally straight up wrong, so those could definitely use an update. But these are small issues in an otherwise excellent dictionary/memorization app that has played, and will continue to play, a large role in my Japanese fluency journey. Lifetime Subscription Highly Recommended!!!
