Description

Pixaki is the best pixel art app for iPad. It packs a whole load of features into a clean, modern interface, and it works great with Apple Pencil. So now you can make game sprites on the couch, animated backgrounds on your commute, or music videos in the park.
DRAWING
• Pixel perfect painting mode automatically removes double pixels when doing line art.
• Round, square, and matrix dither brushes.
• Line tool, which can be locked to isometric angles.
• Rectangle and ellipse tools.
LAYERS OF ANIMATION
• Layers are shared across the whole project, which means every layer has its own timeline.
• Static image layers for background and foreground elements that are the same on every frame.
• 18 layer blend modes.
• Rename layers.
• Reorder layers and frames by using drag and drop.
• Scrubbable timeline.
• Advanced onion skin options.
• Select multiple layers or frames at once to quickly make bulk adjustments.
• Use high resolution reference layers to pixel over your sketches and photos.
COLOUR
• Four colour selection modes: a square picker with an infinitely scrolling hue slider, sliders for HSB and RGB, hex code input, and the project palette.
• Eyedropper to sample any colour from the canvas.
• Bucket fill, with contiguous or discontiguous options.
• Colour replace across the whole project.
SELECTION
• Freehand, rectangular, and colour selection.
• Use the active selection as a mask.
• Cut or copy the selected pixels and paste them to any app that supports pasting images.
TRANSFORM
• Move without needing to select. Position the image on or off the canvas without clipping.
• Scale uniformly up and down, or squash and stretch.
• Rotate by any angle.
• Flip horizontally and vertically.
IMPORT & EXPORT
• Import any static image, or a GIF.
• Import and export Aseprite documents (requires iPadOS 13 ore newer).
• Import and export Photoshop documents (PSDs).
• Use magnification when sharing to upscale without the results looking blurry.
• Export as a single image or image sequence as PNG, TIFF, or JPEG-2000.
• Export animated images as GIF or APNG.
• Export QuickTime movies with H264 or HEVC codecs.
• Export as a sprite sheet, with configurable columns.

Best pixel animation art app, period.

Can’t wait for updates. This app definitely has promise. Not perfect, but it’s seriously moving in the right direction. Think a lighter weight version of Aseprite, but on the iPad. Pixel freedom.

Dumb changes

Why did you change the animation into this key frame mess and it won’t import all the colour palettes as promised only gimp. For such an expensive app. I expected more. Dropped down to two stars because the key frame system now is just STUPID. GET THE OTHER APPS TO ANIMATE. CRAP UX NOW

I doubt you'll find better on ipad. That said, I really wish a chromatic circle was available for color picking.

Great for pixel art on iPad, but has some flaws

I love this app for making pixel art on iPad - for making sprites and pixel illustrations, it is vastly better than Procreate. I prefer using the Apple Pencil to draw so this was an easy purchase for me - if you prefer iPad to mouse/keyboard/tablet/etc or you just want to make pixel art on the go, this is probably the best app for iOS. The UI looks nice and the animation tools are simple and straightforward to use. I love the palettes feature - makes it very easy to import and export custom palettes and save them for future use. The dithering brushes are great, and game-changing for anyone who dithers by hand. With that said, those who have worked with other digital drawing programs (Procreate, Paint Tool SAI, Photoshop, CSP) will notice that Pixaki is lacking in certain tools for transforming your art. For example, there is no alpha lock or layer lock, and no way to make colour or value adjustments across an entire layer (or multiple) - Pixaki makes up for this by including a “Replace Colours” feature instead, but this is a very slow and clunky workaround. You cannot select or transform multiple layers, which I find very limiting. The colour picking tools are unintuitive but easy enough to get used to - I do wish there was a basic colour disk instead of the strange spectrum-wide horizontal slider. Also, right now there are some frustrating bugs with the selection tool that can easily overwrite your layers if you’re not careful. After using the app for about a month now, I would definitely recommend it for beginners, but my workflow is much slower than it would be if it had some of the basic tools found within pretty much every other digital art software out there. That’s just me though - if you like working with limited palettes and don’t need to do a lot of colour processing, this is great.

Fantastic App!

I’ve been using the app for a pretty long time now, and I was pleasantly surprised by the latest large update. So much more intuitive and great features. It was great before, It’s even better now! Definitely worth it.

Crashing when creating slideshow gif

I’m trying to create a gif slideshow from 16 screenshots but the app crashes. Is there a size limit that I should be aware of?

Wow!

I really love this app!! I hope you continue to work and develop it, I would love to see Layer Modes added (multiply, soft light, overlay, etc) that would be freaking awesome. Overall the UI is super intuitive and easy to grasp. Amazing stuff
