Description

Pixaki is the best pixel art app for iPad. It packs a whole load of features into a clean, modern interface, and it works great with Apple Pencil. So now you can make game sprites on the couch, animated backgrounds on your commute, or music videos in the park.

DRAWING
• Pixel perfect painting mode automatically removes double pixels when doing line art.
• Round, square, and matrix dither brushes.
• Line tool, which can be locked to isometric angles.
• Rectangle and ellipse tools.

LAYERS OF ANIMATION
• Layers are shared across the whole project, which means every layer has its own timeline.
• Static image layers for background and foreground elements that are the same on every frame.
• 18 layer blend modes.
• Rename layers.
• Reorder layers and frames by using drag and drop.
• Scrubbable timeline.
• Advanced onion skin options.
• Select multiple layers or frames at once to quickly make bulk adjustments.
• Use high resolution reference layers to pixel over your sketches and photos.

COLOUR
• Four colour selection modes: a square picker with an infinitely scrolling hue slider, sliders for HSB and RGB, hex code input, and the project palette.
• Eyedropper to sample any colour from the canvas.
• Bucket fill, with contiguous or discontiguous options.
• Colour replace across the whole project.

SELECTION
• Freehand, rectangular, and colour selection.
• Use the active selection as a mask.
• Cut or copy the selected pixels and paste them to any app that supports pasting images.

TRANSFORM
• Move without needing to select. Position the image on or off the canvas without clipping.
• Scale uniformly up and down, or squash and stretch.
• Rotate by any angle.
• Flip horizontally and vertically.

IMPORT & EXPORT
• Import any static image, or a GIF.
• Import and export Aseprite documents (requires iPadOS 13 ore newer).
• Import and export Photoshop documents (PSDs).
• Use magnification when sharing to upscale without the results looking blurry.
• Export as a single image or image sequence as PNG, TIFF, or JPEG-2000.
• Export animated images as GIF or APNG.
• Export QuickTime movies with H264 or HEVC codecs.
• Export as a sprite sheet, with configurable columns.

Best pixel app for iPad but not without its flaws

tccompletely on

I’ve been using the pro version heavily for over a week now. Overall the experience is wonderful. Being able to use the pencil for pixel art is great. The app is intuitive and easy to use. It is hands down the best option available for iPad but I have to say there are better desktop programs than this. Where it can be improved: Let us measure! The marquee tool ought to show the dimensions. Line tool. Let us select a width. Free drawing. I would love to tap my finger while drawing a line to make it straight (as in. Procreate). Same for circles. Animations. Wow the animations feature is so bad I don’t even know how to begin. It is unusable for me at the moment. Brush size. Let us change the size on the main menu without needing to click twice. It’s a small but important QoL feature. Grid size. Let us enter custom number without using + - keys. Overall though this app is great!

Loses you files if you setup one drive as your cloud storage

It allows you to save to one drive in the settings but when you try and open from the one drive after closing the app it locks you out saying the storage is unsupported, lost hours of work thinking it was being saved. I hate this programme and apple’s iPad so much for this kind of thing

One of the best pixel art editors

TGpixel on

I have experience with other pixel art editors and, being primarily a photoshop user, I was reluctant to try an Ipad app as an alternative to my desktop options. Being frequently on the move (commuting to work ~1 h everyday), I decided to give it a try and boy was I surprised. Pixaki is a joy to use! It has tools that I wasn’t really expecting, such as pixel perfect and dithering brush. It runs fast, has animation capacities, robust layer system, great rotation tool and everything else one would expect. Super pleased with Pixaki, to the point where this has become my main software (I kid you not, it has been good 10 days that I don’t touch Photoshop). For what is worth, I do have a few kind suggestions to the developer: 1. The colour palette is a bit unusual and, while I love that you give us four different options to manipulate colours, the wheel doesn’t seem to cut it too much. A photoshop-like grid would be a bit clear I reckon. 2. Allow for multiple animation sequences, as currently we are only able to have one per file. Otherwise, there is a bit of adjustment that needs to take place to assure the animation is running smoothly on all layers. 3. Definitely not required, but some kind of symmetry system for tile editing would be amazing. 4. Having things snapped to grids would make things easier, particularly when you need to paint pixels in the middle of two lines that are 30+ pixels apart. The way you currently have to do this is manually count till the middle and draw from there. 5. Some markers when using the line/shapes tool showing us the length (width and height in the case of rectangles) in real time of the trace would be great, as it allows for precision work to take place. Really, these are just suggestions. The software is great as it is and one of the best I have ever used, but it could be THE NUMBER ONE in the market if a few more features are implemented :) Thank you for making such an amazing tool for us artists.

Sadly lacking features. Hope dev sorts some.

This app could be ‘the’ pixel art app if only for these issues: -No clipping masks (I don’t call drawing only inside a selection a ‘mask’). -No highlight/shadow tool. -No gradient tool. -No simple tweening or key-framing. -No layer blend modes, just opacity. -Only 1 animation sequence per file, misleading in so far as having multiple drawing layers != to multiple animation tracks. Simple example: A gun sprite needs a simple light glint effect where a bar of white pixels move from left to right over the gun. Without clipping masks, this requires me to manually erase or re-draw pixels of the glint layer so that it conforms to the gun shape, frame by frame. This is needlessly destructive and just isn’t workable for even slightly more complex animation sequences. What about if I have multiple gun sprites I want to do this same animation for? Well that would require manually repeating the process of placing or erasing pixels to cover over the next gun, for each and every one. It is unreasonable to expect any kind of uniformity in design by doing this, so inevitably other software is needed. A simple clipping mask would let me clip the light layer to any gun sprite I want, so my animation goes from editing every frame over and over, to the software making the already animated moving light layer just clip any filled pixels under it. This is such a huge oversight which in combination with the inability to rotate in 1px increments makes the animation capabilities of this app present in name only, unless you like the idea of manually pushing pixels to repeat the same stuff over and over. Dear developer, I can work around the lack of key frames, effects, shaders, adjustment layers, a file having only 1 animation track, even simple position translations. But please for heavens sakes, implement layer masking. Thank you. Edit: dev implemented rotation update which addresses one of my issues, the day of my original review going live. Many thanks

A bit limited

I’m a bit disappointed, I just finished an illustration and I’ll have to take it to Aesprite on the pc as this app doesn’t have a rotation tool.
