1-year review update
After a year of using this app I can confidently say that RealityScan has become one of my favorite 3D-scanning apps for iPhone.
The scanning process itself is not as quick or easy as with many new apps available, but when it’s done right the results are unmatched.
The app has more than a few flaws, and is honestly quite frustrating to use,
but the results are usually worth it.
Over the course of a year it hasn’t improved as much as I had hoped, but it’s headed in the right direction. One can’t expect more from a completely free app.
Pros:
- Accurate models and texture.
- Closed “clean” meshes.
- Free (optional data collection, no intrusive ads)
- Does actually have customer support.
Cons:
- Capture guides requires constant internet connection.
- Misaligned frames are common.
- Good captures are time consuming.
- Occasional uploading/processing problems.
- Limited on-device editing.
Recommended for:
- Medium to large sized objects
- Combinations of different textures (matte, shiny, furry etc.)
Not recommended for:
- Small objects
- Extensive scenes with complicated or diffuse shapes.
- “Room scanning ”
Original review:
I recommend this 3d scanner app for beginners as it’s both free and easy to use. It’s a great starting point to learn the concept of 3d capture through photogrammetry.
The app is still relatively new so I expect it to improve over time, but as of now the finished results are unfortunately mediocre at best compared to other free alternatives. It especially struggles with aligning the outlines of objects.
Compared to similar apps the scanning process is easy, but also requires a lot more images to get even close to the same results. There aren't any options to adjust exposure or focus so getting good quality photos might take several tries.
As I mentioned before, I expect this app to get significantly better with time so I recommend using it once in a while to see for yourself.
Need several accounts to use this
Had to set up an Epic games account, and sync it with my google account, and after starting my project they wanted me to create even one more account somewhere. Deleted app, and will not recommend.
Slower, more pricy and more clunky than Polycam
Ive waited 40 minutes for a quick scan with 30 images of a banana, and I had to creste 2 accounts (Epic Games and Sketchfab) and sign up for 1 year free subscription and then 15$ a month.
Think Ill stick with my already paid Polycam sub
It pretty good
It’s better than what it was before hand so Epic Games has been fixing the issues with app. I think this app has potential Epic just needs to focus on it.
easy to use
i’m very impressed with the ease of use and model detail .
Can’t even sign in to see the app, it locks up
I signed into my epic account, and it turned to a black screen with a rotating white loading wheel. First, I quit the app, then I reinstalled it, and to my amazement. As soon as I opened, it, goes straight back to the same black screen with a white loading wheel. I haven’t even seen anything inside the app yet.
로그인이 안되면?
로그인이 안되는 황당한 앱
I can’t even login
Every time i try to open the app it asks me to login. When i try to logon with my epic account it launches a webpage and then i don’t see any username/password panel. Then it closes and go back to the opening page and ask to login again. I can’t even search for this problem online because it is very weird.
Easy and convenient!
Free app that provided solid results. It was pretty easy to use — even my parents were able to learn it :)
Unusable. Run.
It is mind-boggling how difficult they make it to log into this and any Epic Games resources for people trying to just create content on their phones and PCs. How can you possibly hope to use any of these tools proficiently if you can’t even login to use them consistently like every other platform we all use every day on the Internet? The fact that epic games has never taken any of this seriously and lets their users struggle in forums, trying to figure out the most basic authentication problems gives me no confidence whatsoever in this product.
