If you want to take charge of how much you drink, or when you drink, Saying When is a successful program that provides step-by-step directions that can help.

You could be interested in quitting drinking or just cutting down and the simple action of tracking your drinking and your urges to drink can help you get it under control.

The Saying When app was designed and developed by the Education department at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Canada’s leading addictions and mental health hospital. The program itself has been used with great success for over 20 years, and is now finally available in a mobile format. You can make it work for you.

With Saying When, you can get help and keep your concerns about your drinking private. There’s no need to attend meetings or open up in front of a group. It’s a self-help approach that truly is anonymous and can positively influence your health, your job, or your relationships.

A PROGRAM THAT WORKS
Based on research and evaluation of various treatment methods for patients with alcohol problems Saying When is a self-help program that has a proven track record. The same tools that successful people have consistently used to bring their drinking under control for over 20 years are used in this mobile version.

SELF-ASSESSMENT
Answer a few quick questions to set your baseline for success. Understanding when and why you drink will help you know when to “say when.” And if you ever think you can’t do it alone and need more support, links to resources are available.

PERSONALIZED GOALS
You set your own goals to fit your lifestyle. We’ll provide you with plenty of Tips for Success that will help you in your journey.

YOUR DASHBOARD
Your personal dashboard will let you know just how you are doing. From here you can track when you have a drink or an urge to drink and you can view your daily stats, monitor your progress and see how you’ve been handling things since you started Saying When.

This tool is not meant for people with serious drinking problems but it does provide links to reputable sources that can provide additional help if it is needed.

If you—or someone you care about—are having problems related to drinking, Saying When can help.

Could save your life

If you’re looking at this app there’s probably a pretty good reason for it, for me it’s binge drinking and the chaos it brings into my life and so far 5 weeks in I’m grateful for what the app brings. Stick with it! You can do it, you can change your drinking patterns and ensure you’re always drinking in the low risk group, could save your life. Well done CAMH.

Doesn't do the job.

This app is supposed to track alcohol consumption. However, the authors seem to think all packaging of alcohol is somehow "standard". You need to be able set the alcohol content and accurately set the volume by typing it in. No point trying to use selections like "light beer" (2.5% to 4.9%) and there isn't even strong beer, eg 13% barley wine. All booze comes in various volumes and strengths. Just allow me to set the volume and alcohol content accurately, and that's it. It really doesn't matter what kind of booze it is. Then, a simple calculation can figure out how many standard drinks it is.

Pros and cons

Pros- taking stock to see where you are in beginning. I return to this to see my baseline. Coping strategies in advance. I draw on this during urges. Homepage tracker is good. Cons- everything measured in ml. No ounces or option for ounces. No repeat last entry option. I drink the same things almost every time so this would save time. Have to wind back date next day for each and every drink - when adding a cocktail this is so time consuming it isn't funny. (Eg : Negroni - 1 part vermouth, 1 part Campari, 1 part gin). And all in millilitres!! Argh! Please get repeat option!!! Check out myfitnesspal for what this looks like. :)

This app contains useful information and is helpful in keeping track of goals and drinks consumed but lacks in feedback and motivational messages. It would be inspiring to see progress and improvement posted or sent in message form. If goals are missed or exceeded, additional messages or supportive links would add to the value of "Saying "When."

I find the app helpful for the most part. Good to track things. It is not always intuitive - at times I have tried to find info that I have seen in the app previously and can't find it.
