One of a kind but still ridden with bugs
We’ve done about two dozen of the Shaka Guide, including the Walking Tours in Oahu and the National Parks. The app is overall pretty neat but in every guide there has always been at least one bug (e.g., voice volume for some sections drops unexpectedly to half of the overall volume for the Shenandoah NP guide). Most of the bugs afflict ALL driving tours. For example, the GPS map slowly but surely rotates clockwise so that at one point you seem to drive downwards. The passenger has to hold the phone and counter rotate it so that the driver isn’t too distracted.
Must have for solo travelers
I dowloaded all Hawaiian tours and they were loaded with very informative stuff about history (which the Hawaiian culture is full of), scenic spots, general information about what to do and what not etc etc….if you are traveling solo it feels like having a local sitting beside you talkting to you. I liked the dry humor and would definitely download it again. Great job and mahalo nui for creating this app!
Well intended
So far we tried the two walking tours in Oahu. The longer Heart of Wakiki tour was annoyingly sensitive to the GPS and blind to simple human behavior, stopping the current story midway and starting the next story randomly. The stops of interest in Waikiki are very close together and this makes it worse. Because of the claustrophobic crowds in Waikiki we occasionally bypassed some stops on the other sidewalk and then returned. For example, we didn’t go straight to stop 7 but took a detour which incidentally was also stop 12 (again they’re so close together) and then story 7 stopped and story 12 just started. I wished the developers could really understand that no, just because i am physically close to 12 i don’t want to skip through 8-11 but rather continue listening to 7 from a little afar. Keep the stories in order, please, in line with human behavior and bot blindly follow the gps coordinates. All in all, it was very frustrating.
The second day, Sunday October 29th, we gave the second walking tour a try in Historic Downtown. Each of the 15 spots was closed to the public so we listened to the stories behind very high fences. Maybe because it was a Sunday but i wish they would have warned us.
Road to Hana
For us, Shaka App is the best way to travel. Many important informations are included. You can decide, when you wanna start, what you wanna do, when you wanna stop, how long you wanna have a break. We also love the music, the stories, the history parts and the sense of humour.
