Too Much Behind Paywall

Grimendale on

After Nike removed their custom training plans, I was looking for an alternative. This seemed like a good option, but it’s worthless unless you pay (and not great even then). The kicker is putting the audio prompts for the different pan steps behind the premium paywall. I shouldn’t have to keep pulling out my phone to know when to move on. The pace tracker is spotty at best and way overestimated how fast I was moving until after it was over. There are better options out there.

Terrible AI

Avatar of Tom on

I’ve been using the trainer for 3 months now. Working hard, doing things I’ve never done. And the metrics for goal, speed, endurance all go down, down, down. And the program gives me completely unachievable runs. Leaves me feeling demotivated and like I’m underachieving when I’m working as hard as I’ve ever worked. This app makes me want to give up on running. Not for beginner/intermediate. If you want to goal yourself against world class athletes, then that’s the target audience for this app.

Good app, Needs More Intergration

Mud_5 on

I like the app so far after my first run, it just needs better integration with other apps like Strava and Apple Watch.

Using for First Time - 4th full marathon

Leh Meh Heh on

I was looking for a paid training plan with flexibility that worked with my electronics. Started a marathon training program >18 weeks before my event. Three weeks out and the longest run scheduled is 13.6 miles. I emailed and didn't get a response. Then tried through the app. I was provided a link to FAQ that did answer my question. Race is in two weeks. Will provide update after.

Bugs

mjc452 on

I have been using the app for about a week and was really enjoying it, but the app has been freezing intermittently and I haven’t been able to open it for my last two workouts. While I still can view the training plan which is nice, my favorite part was the cues from the app which prevented me from constantly looking at my wrist or phone. This app would be great if it worked consistently

I want to like this

CletusGlory on

I want to like this app. However, my plan keeps changing, vanishing, even past workouts disappeared and then I had to resync from Strava then go through them and change them to freestyle and update the perceived effort on each of them... again. I had a workout scheduled for Wednesday, now it shows no workouts scheduled at all. Frustration with the app not working far outweigh my hopefullness of getting AI driven custom running plans to meet my goals. I have 15 days left of free my premium plan, which Iay need to cancel if things don't start working properly. It doesn't seem like this is ready for public release.

A different approach - and feeling my best ever

Cwy1980 on

Ive tried various online coaching plans over thr last ten years and have been frustrated with the inflexibility and lack of adaptation to where im physiologically at and feeling. Ive been following the plan pretty closely the last month and change and I can feel a difference over other years when i start training again for the spring. I feel the best I have in my running journey in quite some time! I have a lot more confidence in hitting my race goals this year and hopefully achieving my personal Everest - running an Ultra by year end. Would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for an adaptive, data-driven approach to training.

The Common Flaw of AI

chiachera on

I think there’s a lot of potential for AI to help create training plans, especially with online one-on-one coaching being so pricey, but at the end of the day this app proves that you can’t do it without some human input. The app often makes odd choices about training, like assigning back to back hard workouts or long runs. I’ve had assessments scheduled after assessments. Those are often paired with super short runs across the rest of the week, meaning I often get the bulk of my mileage in those LRs, a poor training framework IMO. There’s also the frequent tweaks to training, no consistency across assessment runs (i.e. perceived assessment of 15 mins and then one of 1 hr and 20 mins), and differences between the app and website. I don’t know what the staffing looks like at the organization, but like many tech companies, I suspect it could benefit from hiring non-big data folks who have an understanding of the psychology of training as well as the safest way to build plans.

AI is not smart at all

ahjushi on

I’ve been running for several years, about 30-50 miles a week and thankfully injury free. That was until I started using TAO. Now I know I’m just getting older, so at first I didn’t blame TAO and just assumed it was my aging body. Correlation isn’t causation, after all. I logged my injury in the app and told it to pause my training for 5 weeks while I recovered (you can set a specific date for TAO to start scheduling runs again). After I felt like I was recovered enough, I went ahead and ended my “training pause” in the app, but I did NOT clear my injury status (injury status and training scheduling are independent, which is actually nice). First day after the 5-week pause it scheduled me an easy 11 min run which felt fine and pain free. Then strangely the immediate next day it scheduled me a 59 min run. And I’m about 11 weeks of using the app, that was actually the longest run it ever scheduled for me (prior to the injury the longest run was 52 min). I’m no training coach or expert, but that seems terribly wrong and dangerous. Needless to say I didn’t do it. I used the default settings for risk tolerance and such, yet asking me to run for 59 min just 2 days after coming out of an injury (without clearing the injured status, mind you), and that being the longest run it ever scheduled, seems very risky and reckless! It was at this point that I felt like TAO is a bit dangerous. I’ll try setting it to the lowest risk tolerance possible and see if that’s better, but I can’t recommend this app based on my experiences.

Email me when the Apple Watch version comes out

Jcokacola on

I have been using Runkeeper for train for a marathon but my workouts keep getting erase and not syncing correctly so I am desperately trying to fine another option. The idea of this apps seems perfect but I like to run only with my Apple Watch. The phone stays at home.
