This is a very useful app for teaching and learning words and simple phrases. My three year old grandaughter who is learning to read and write can chat with her uncle who is profoundly deaf, he can not speak or hear the app but can read and write to her and she can pick up on the voices. She is also using to to talk! to her dolls and other toys, and more recently with her friends. The keyboard and display can be varied as required ie qwerty, Alphabetic, upper or lower case and mixed. Well worth the money in fact a bargain even at a higher price. What looked like an interesting gimmick has turned out to be a valuable tool for teaching. It is refreshing that it is not laden with exhortations to spend money on neccessary improvements. As it stands it is probably the best app I have bought so far and the developers are to be congratulated and thanked. Possible improvements would be the addition of numbers . If the app vould be linked with itunes or similar to display with apple tv on larger screen it would be a great bonus for more than two people to use at same time Added comment 31st october 2012 The app has been upgraded now with numbers and a new male voice, and is even better than before. The includion of simple arithmetic would be a bonus particularly since the numbers are clearly pronounced. A possible improvement would be the includion af a child or juvenile voice, preferably uk standard english Added comment may 2015 This app has been improved so that it no longer can be updated on my grandaughters ipad. Since the ipad is first generation it is not vompatible with ios 7 or later. This is very disappointing since a later ipad is too expensive. While the original app still works she is upset that it is not the same as her friends version, and at five and a half years old summed up the the latest change as the work of a silly man. I mudt admit I have to agree with her.
Good app, contains high frequency words and allows you to create your own spelling tests. Can change voice from u.s to uk.
This app has been invaluable helping my son with his weekly spelling test. We input the list, have adjusted the voice to English uk phonics and we try and do it every day. The basic word lists provided are excellent too as a start and would recommend this app to all.
My children (7 & 5) love doing their spelling homework with this app. We tend to use our own lists rather than the built in ones. Our eldest also enjoys making up sentences to then play back. Good fun all round.
saw this app in the iPad kids magazine, but tried others word apps. Then came back to this one. I wish I just gone straight to this, it's a lovely app! Currently using it for my son's spelling list, which is great, because he gets to play on my iPad, but I don't have to battle with him to do his spellings!!! My daughter, who is pre-school just likes making silly words with this too! Thanks
I love this app, it's great for helping with auditory processing and can be used many ways to learn how well a student is learning phonics. The placing of letters in defined spaces helps children to structure simple sentences. I use it a lot for informal assessment in my work with children with speech and language difficulties.
It is so complicated to use that it is not usable. Navigation is poor and most importantly as far as words and phonics which are key - does not have audio support.
Lots of fantastic spellings to work through, though some are poorly recorded and so difficult to decipher. Not just American accent but some words don't sound enough like the word to be spelled to avoid confusion. This has stopped me using app with students.
Really pleased with this app! We enter a spelling list of our own each week being school homework and 3 weeks down the line it has made spelling learning much more fun than pen and paper for our 9 year old. As a parent i like to have an educational app on iPhone too for car journeys etc rather than just games.
