BATTERY USE
Arc is only awake and using GPS when you are active and moving. For the rest of the day Arc stays in a low power sleep mode, with GPS turned off, to conserve battery.
On a typical day of two to three hours of travel a single full battery charge should last from morning to evening without requiring extra recharging during the day. However longer trips (for example a long hike or cross country drive) may consume more than expected battery, due to Arc needing to be awake and recording, with GPS activated, for the duration of the trip.
For longer trips, I recommend plugging your phone into a car charger or battery pack, to avoid unpleasant battery surprises.

Arc Timeline Reviews

Great app with years of maintenance

Jantje.BE on

Belgium

I love to have an up to date database of locations where I’ve been over the years, but I want that information available only to me and not in some big company’s database. Arc has been giving me this for years and as long as iCloud is private, this data will be private. I ran into an issue recently and the developer quickly helped me resolve that. (short version: do not use Arc Timeline and Arc Mini simultaneously)

“Arc has stopped recording”

Wim Leers on

Belgium

“Arc has stopped recording” keeps happening. I’ve tried Arc on and off for months and this keeps happening. Perhaps it’s my phone, or my location. But just now it happened again while stationary at a table at home. The developer is AMAZING, super responsive. But for now, Arc is not for me. I am looking forward to giving it another try in a few months though :)

Hostile developer with frustrating payment policies

eahiv on

United States

Doesn’t work very well.

False bike readings

FloridaMan1997 on

United States

I’m not sure if it’s because this app records speed as an average over time (thus including time stopped in traffic) but it keeps recording bicycle rides even I’m driving (and sometimes when I’m walking). It’s a little more than annoying to have to edit every single time.

Model app. A+++. Works exactly as advertised

kseeful on

United States

Open source, privacy-preserving, a clear payment structure, no micro transactions, excellent UI, always works like it says it will, straightforward settings. There's seriously nothing to dislike. A+++ app

Indispensable

jadanzzy on

United States

“What did I do that day?” “Why did I spend $x on this date?” Using Arc to do historical detective work on my own life has been so valuable, especially being a privacy-focused solution. Worth the money, full stop.

Good idea but flawed

bafga on

United States

Since Google Maps is doing some screwy things with their timeline I wanted to try something different to keep track of where I’ve been. I tried this while on a trip, and the app kept being interrupted by iOS, and the explanation was that iOS can interrupt any app at any time. So it always seems to have gaps because of this.

Useful app, insane battery usage

James Baxter on

United States

The most recent updates have been accounting for up to forty percent of my battery drain. I have no idea what the issue is. The developer has been unresponsive.

Locations are fragmented

DLuksa on

United States

The location sensitivity is so high that anytime I walk within a location, “work” for example, it logs multiple entries. I wish it could more easily recognize one 8 hour day at work rather than 4x2 hour days plus “transport”. For a smart app it is relatively dumb.

Meh

WJ-Graham on

United States

Worked great before the sudden paywall. Now it’s a wildly overpriced and slightly better “Google maps history” lol.
