Too expensive for what you get. Disappointed.

microsandwich on

I thought I’d give the trial a go, but found that there seemed to be quite a bit missing. Masks are limited with no means to manually tweak some of the erroneous foreground/background edges as there’s no way to paint missing parts of a mask or push/smudge parts of a portrait or depth mask that is incorrect. Also there’s no way to invert a radial mask. The website claims to be able to blur background in a portrait photo, but I was unable to find any blur function no matter how hard I tried on both iPhone and iPad. There’s some nice ui elements, but it feels like ‘half’ an app. There’s no effect like bokeh that you can mask in etc. even the presets aren’t affected by masks. I can’t justify the cost. I’d pay about ¼ the price as I could only see myself using it casually. Snapseed does so much more and has a hidden mask mode which you can apply on every single image adjusting function, filter, and effect, so that you can blend or paint that adjustment in. All those masks are adjustable from a history of operations you’ve made. Snapseed is free, so I would expect Darkroom to offer more flexibility. Darkroom does offer video processing, but for those working with photos, it seems to add to the price substantially.

meh …. not there yet, an unfinished wrk of art

ProfesrP on

i really wanted to like this app but truth be told, it’s just not up to par. you can’t adjust the masks tool arnd the edges of subjects like tree tops or sea stacks or ppl/silhouettes on the horizon. It just blankets over em making em part of the foreground or background. There is no way to refine an edge because there are no brushes (magic tool) so what edge definition there is has like a 20 pixel feather halo arnd it, aarrgghhh. And there is no healing tool, even snapseed has a healing tool. So, honestly the only thing I found it could do that say snapseed (for free) can’t do is masking, & it does such a poor job of that it’s not worth it. IMO it needs a lot of work before it can overtake snapseed or replace LR, at best it is a £10 one time purchase. I wld pay £10 to support the team so they can continue improving their app, but sadly, as of now I have cancelled my annual subscription & deleted the app. Add brushes & an edge definition tool so you can isolate subjects in your image like foreground tree tops from the background sky, as an example, and I might reconsider looking at it again because right now it’s an unfinished work of art.

Almost a must-have…

Gfxmaven on

Excellent app just missing a couple of features to make it a must have: a healing brush, editable masks, and working directly off external storage. Google Snapseed is still king of mobile masking, and I have to fall back on that for a few features. Almost there though!

Don’t waste your time

Kieran939 on

I have spent a fair amount of time editing a bunch RAW photos only for them to not be able to be exported. I just keep getting an error and I cannot find a fix. Useless app.

Simple & Effective.

Wobbler67 on

An extremely user-friendly editing resource but it’s simplicity belies it’s effectiveness. I’d 100% recommend Darkroom for beginners and pro’s on the run.

One of the best!

Lankysi on

Most photography apps struggle to load my huge photo library and often freeze or crash. Not the case here. Very snappy and I can scroll through my iCloud library with no loading issues at all!

Has potential but why cap export size?

Steam on

This is a really great app, however, I don’t think I can commit to the yearly subscription with export sizes cropped to 11mp, really limiting especially when you want to edit exported tiffs in other apps. Unless there is an export size option I am missing I’m not sure I can recommend this app, a shame because it has a lot of features that make it really useful. Improvements ideally could be Option to import and export in files, one drive, etc Export cap removed Lens distortion correction (manual not auto) Heal function

Great app, one major downside

Satchman2000 on

i’ve used Darkroom for a few years now, and its great. It gives me the iPhone photography workflow I need. One big downside for me is the pricing model. I have 90% of the app unlocked as I bought premium features before the switch to the subscription model. However, this means if I want to unlock masks and color grading (the only tools I dont currently have), I need a monthly subscription or pay £65 to unlock everything forever. Perhaps some sort of loyalty discount for previous customers? I’d happily pay £20 to unlock the extra features, but not £65.

Superb Photo editor marred by dangerous bugs

phizhog on

I love the interface and I do not want to stop using it: It's great and intuitive to use. I'm giving 4* at the moment, not 5* mainly because of a number of potentially dangerous bugs, which might cause loss of edits or edits applied or photos being wrongly discarded. Everything you can do with Apple's editor you can do with this App, but better, faster and with more accurate edits. It is also excellent for curation because (unlike Apple) it can show a photos details, filesize and resolution etc. There are also things in this app that can't be done with the Apple photo editor. There's a useful mask set and you can batch edit/crop/rotate a set of photos. The 2 things that put me off is the moment are: The appalling inconsistency between photo-edited/exported flags in the edit-screen-side-photo-strip and in the thumbnail flags on the library view. Inconsistent and dangerous photo views and photo details shown in the edit screen. For instance, moving from one photo to the next by repeatedly flicking-right/left may not move the photo shown properly in the photo strip, which has a dangerous impact on the displayed photo status. Further, using the photo strip to move from photo to photo by tapping on it may not result in the correct photo or details being shown. This may not be apparent, if you have a lot of very similar photos such as burst mode sequences or other photo sets, for instance. You can end up applying the wrong edits to the wrong photo. In addition to the above there has been a long standing bug whereby if a photo is deleted from the photo edit screen, the photo that is shown correctly is the next photo after the one deleted, but the details of the deleted photo are shown instead of the correct next photo details. This might be the key to understanding why the flag/film-strip/photo-displayed results are inconsistent on the edit screen. It seems there might be an issue for a photo, especially after changes have been made to the previous photo. I've got plenty more bugs like this to notify, and I would do so more methodically, if only I was on the latest iPadOS version. You have been warned. I have been known to write code professionally myself though not on this platform and I'm retired. If I were part of Darkroom's development team, I would be suggesting an urgent review of the consistency of the photo movement and edit/export flags shown code on the edit screen. In fairness to the Darkroom team, it may be that iPadOS is misreporting details

30% BF deal! Do the maths!

TAK1967 on

The BF deal is 30% off the yearly subscription. The price shown is £17.49…this is not 30% of the normal price of £19.99. Very misleading. I’d love to be be able to review the App but not with a misleading offer!
