Fugue Machine is a tool inspired by composition techniques used in Baroque music and Serialism — e.g. Bach’s canons and fugues, and Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique. The idea was to design a tool to manipulate a melody’s speed, direction, and pitch, as well as play multiple variations of the melody simultaneously.

As it turned out, the best implementation for this was to reimagine one of the most fundamental building blocks of all music sequencers: the piano roll.

Fugue Machine is the world’s first multi-playhead piano roll. Create a music sequence and play it back with up to four playheads at once — each at various speeds, directions, pitches, and more. Watch the playheads dance, and hear the complex patterns that emerge.

It’s mesmerizing.

Fugue Machine supports iPhone, iPad, MIDI, AUv3 MIDI, Ableton Link, Audiobus, Audiobus 3 MIDI, and Inter-App Audio. Thanks to the AUv3 standard, you can run multiple instances of Fugue Machine on the same device when hosted in an AUv3 MIDI host app — like Logic Pro, AUM, and Audiobus.

Brilliant - any updates for the future?

This app is so wonderful - be great to have new randomisation and some kind of arrangement possibilities to upgrade as this would really help for musicians creating evolving ambient music.

Superb app, fun and deep

Works flawlessly with IOS apps or external midi and a lot of fun. A quick request please, if the option key could also work from my magic keyboard instead of just the screen button, the select workflow would be hugely improved?

Really love this but..

Hi Alexandernaut, I really love what you’ve done here, but when oh when will there be a version where all of your fantastic control parameters are exposed over midi? I purchase a lot of auv3s and the ones where every parameter is available over midi make me ever so happy because this means unlimited possibilities and full control from hardware or software controllers as well as automation via a sequencer. On the flip side, auv3s that only have some or no parameters connectable, are terribly frustrating. In these cases, all of the possibilities are frustratingly only potential ones that can never actually be realised and this largely reduces the app to little more than a toy. It also reflects poorly on the developers. I’m pretty sure that the coding involved to achieve this goal would take only minimal effort, so why leave paying customers holding such restricted versions of your machines? The potential for evolving/building/growing synth sequences with this app, where each parameter an be manipulated by something like a Midi Fighter Twister, would be a performance tool of epic proportion. Also.. Allowing an incoming midi note to set the root key of the sequence, would also massively grow it’s use cases! So, please, hit me up with an update and make me very very happy.

Look at the price. It is worth every penny. After ten minutes your mind will be full of wonderful possibilities.

Great but eats battery in the background

This is a fun and brilliant tool but it’s very badly behaved and eats battery in the background. I went from 90% to 13% overnight as I’d left this in the background on a 2020 iPad Pro. Not recording anything - just sat in the background where it’s meant to do nothing. After using it, you must kill it from the open apps, which is not normal practice for an iOS devices.

Simple and brilliant

I love this app. It’s so good for generating ideas you wouldn’t necessarily come up with yourself. Sequencing tracks on the digitone via MIDI has been so fun and easy. Just buy it!
