iNethack2 is an iOS port of Nethack 3.6.6.
Original port in 2009 by Dirk Zimmermann which was called iNethack.
Updated by Jeff King to work on modern devices, and renamed iNethack2.
Initial 3.6 update by Joe Doucette.
Various other contributions from the open source community.
iNethack2 features:
· 8 graphical tilesets (plus IBMGraphics mode, and regular ASCII mode in color and monochrome)
· Touchscreen gesture controls: swipe to pan, pinch to zoom
· Customizable keyboard shortcut controls
· Hearse (bones file sharing) integration
· Works on iOS12+

Best game on iOS
the best value for money in terms of hours of enjoyment (well... +/- inf really, but even then).
This game put the fear of IRL death back in me cause what if I never ascend. Trying to get it done after disallowing myself the wiki, and I'm very glad to've found this. The guys who played this game back in the day are gods of gaming, every game dev company making fantasy should give the option to play a few days of nethack tournament every year instead of working to inspire creativity and fun, seriously. Love this game.
Destroyer of lives
Incredible - reliable, immersive, aesthetically pleasing port of the enduring classic. The experience is as deep and rich as you have time to devote to playing it (which in my experience grows to the expense of everything else in your world). Takes a bit to work out the configuration tools are in the iPhone settings options but otherwise well worth the learning curve.
**** Update - the update to this venerable app is the best thing to happen in 2023 so far!
Great game - only one small issue
Great game and port. Only issue I have is that I can’t fully turn off double tap functionality.
Enable external keyboard??
Would be good if iNetHack2 would work with an external Bluetooth keyboard. Shouldn’t it just automatically accept keyboard input from an external keyboard?
A masterpiece and must play game for iPhone
I very rarely write reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way to write one for this game, which in my opinion is a masterpiece and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a challenge, loves immersive role playing, and has an open mind.
Depth: more things to do than in the Witcher 3
Graphics: as retro as it gets, but part of the charm
Replayability: practically infinite by most accounts (the game is over 30 years old now and people are still playing it to this day)
Difficulty: think Dark Souls level challenge crossed with chess against a strong AI
In summary, thank you to the developer of this game, who has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping this game alive for new and future generations. If I could pay for it, I would!

Very well done port. Adherence to UX guidelines ensures a enjoyable experience. Developer is attentive to suggestions and has incorporated several of my own.

This is a brilliant port - the interface is super easy to use and (surprisingly) translates really well to the mobile platform. If you like nethack, you'll love this port!

Found an annoying bug...
Whenever I equip a ring the game crashes, then loading it causes it to crash again...
Absolute classic
I've been playing nethack for over 15 years and keep on coming back. Ports extremely well to iPhone/iPad. With Dirk's port gone we were left with nothing. Thanks for updating and getting it back on the AppStore. Nethack is one of the greatest games ever made. Thanks
