Super old, super hard, super fun.

There is so much to learn in this game, from dealing with countless monsters to finding all sorts of strategies to find the Amulet of Yendor and win the game, there is plenty to keep you coming back for more, who knows when I and others will beat it, but with a classic roguelike such as this, it will never get boring.

Nice

This a wonderful version of a great game. Somehow I missed it first time around (but I did spend a lot of time playing dungeon on a VAX 780 in the early 1980's - that also used Zorkmids). The game is much too hard for most tastes, you can be killed very easily and death is final. But satisfyingly you can hack the iPad version by using a tool like iExplorer on a PC to copy the save game file to your PC and then restoring it if you happen to die later. (The save file is only created on the iPad when you exit the game alive by returning to the home screen). This hack was much used in earlier times and in my view makes for a much better experience for novices. You get a chance to figure out and experiment with ways to overcome obstacles. This approach is regarded as cheating by hard core nethackers. If you want to release your inner nerd - give it a try!

Glitched out for me.

Good game

This is a good game and is a great time sink. There is a surprising amount of depth if you are willing to put in around 15 minutes to learn the mechanics, and the retro style is great. One thing that is not at first apparent, however, is that to change most of the settings you need to visit the apps information in the Settings applicatipn

Faithful and fully working [YAAR]

Been nethacking it up since the early 90s, so didn't want to review this until I checked it was working all the way to ascension. Happily, I can report success in that endeavour, so this is "Yet Another Ascension Review." It isn't quite flawless - I had some crashes setting pickup_types with the in-game interface (use the app settings jnstead!) and levels with a lot of water seem to struggle, but overall it's a very decent translation of the game into the Plane of IoS. Other than the above, the only trouble I had across 50 dungeon levels and about 50,000 turns was a dicy moment on the Plane of Water where I think I restarted the game too quickly, it crashed then told me the game was unrecoverable. On restarting again, though, it restored my position just fine - maybe I'd restarted the game while it was still writing the savefile or something. After that, I only had to dodge Famine a bit, cast charm monster a lot with The Amulet at my feet, and zap some angels and renegade priests out of the way on Astral for a relatively "easy" first-altar-choice ascension. My only regret is my poor Monk, having assiduously eschewed weaponry over 45,000 turns, accidentally bashed an Earth Elemental with a dwarvish mattock while excavating on the Plane of Earth, so I (as usual) didn't get the Weaponless conduct I was hoping for - tricky one, that!
