This has to be the most useful app for practicing spoken French. Unfortunately, the AI Tutor hasn’t been working for weeks and my mails to the developers aren’t going through. Also, often, the AI does not recognize the correct pronunciation of certain words and there is no way to report these errors. These small glitches really need to be fixed.
App only lets you do one free lesson then you are required to subscribe if u wanna move on… lol I’ll stick to duo…
I tried apps like Duolingo and Babel, but none of those really teach you to speak in real life. This app is way better. It feels like you’re really talking to someone, and forces you to get better at putting together real sentences on the spot. Unfortunately this app is still a bit buggy, with some buttons not showing up sometimes, and all the choices of different conversations and lessons can be confusing. But it’s already useful and very promising.
It is very great! But the voice recognition needs to be fixed.
In general the app is good you can get answers and explanations of the mistakes you have made. The app AI doesn’t account for normal capitalization of words when using the microphone function, that doesn’t affect the learning. It’s only a distraction when you receive feedback for the same feedback. The is an error where the system generates a second, unrelated question randomly at times, directly after the previous question. The second question is not read aloud and it disrupts the flow of the conversation. The second question seems to always be “do you likes books” or “what is your favorite dish.” The responses in the app are usually very short even when you provide a long response or ask for an opinion. While I see the potential of the app I cannot continue past the trial period.
Pros: Ariel the developer, is constantly taking feedback from users and making changes. You have the ability to create custom lessons for your specific needs. (Ex. Vocabulary for going to the library or grammar rules on the future tense.) There’s bots for different topics, like tech, food, travelling or just a friendly chat. There’s bots for specific scenarios like going on a date, shopping at the market or going to a job interview. You can save words you’ve seen in lessons & chats to then study later in a quiz. There are a variety of exercises. (Ex. Fill in the blank, word matching, speaking sentences, creating sentences from what you hear.) The app is well priced. When compared to the annual cost of Duolingo or Memrise I think the app is worth it. Plus you’re helping a small developer. The chat features are great. There’s translation for every message, you can click a specific word and learn more about it, there’s suggestions on what to say next, you can speak instead of typing to the bot & get reviews on your messages to see if it’s grammatically correct. I love the progress tracker to see that you’re levelling up as you chat with the bot. I’d love seeing a widget on iOS to see my level or daily streak on my Home Screen. Cons: Lack of structured learning. There are beginner courses & community created ones, but they don’t always fully cover a topic. In apps like Busuu, Rosetta Stone or Duolingo, you slowly work through a course that leads you to the end. Here it’s more DIY and you have to piece things together. The premade bots can be repetitive. Sometimes you’ll do a quiz with a bot and 2 or 3 out of 8 questions will be the same. I’m sure the code just needs to be adjusted to avoid that. The free version is too limited. I think the daily message count should be higher (currently 5). I didn’t think the 5 was enough to show off how great the app is. Overall, I really love this app. I think Ariel has done a great job so far. I paid for the year and I’m excited to see how it changes over time. 5/5 Keep up the great work!
