I think this app is wonderful! I love how clean it is, but I would like it a whole lot more if there was an in depth tutorial on it, I don’t understand how the flash cards work, AT ALL. Add a tutorial, and I’ll consider 5 stars.
Waste of time. You need to subscribe in order to evaluate the app.
Great app, but this has to be one of the most confusing interfaces I’ve seen out there.
Great way to have a large amount of things to learn rapid-fire. Learning the kanji basically requires endless repetition. This app is great for practicing ~300-500 elements per day (or more) depending on your personal stamina. You can get through A LOT in a short amount of time. This app is designed for cramming and having lots of information for each element easily accessible. What I absolutely don't like is the AI voice. It is VERY rudimentary and has tons of glitches and pronunciation errors. For someone trying to learn Japanese, this is very bad. Other apps have much better voices which actually pronounce Japanese correctly. The second thing that needs improvement, as others have mentioned, is the type to answer is far too strict. I am having to manually say my answer is "correct" roughly 1 out of 10 elements. Not sure this is the best for effective training either.
I feel like the typed answers to kanji are too rigid. If I don’t type exactly what the flash card originally said, then it marks it wrong ,even if the answer is right but may have not put the exact verbiage.
Keeps crashing :(
Benkyo is a great app, I have been using it for 2 years and 2 months, and I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn kanji, but it has a few issues that really hold it back from being a truly amazing app. I will cover the things I dont like first, and then I will end with the things that I do like about the app. (A lot of what I talk about in this review might make no sense to someone who doesnt already have the app) (Also- this is a really long review) (Also- note that I use the paid subscription Benkyo Pro - not free benkyo) Things I dont like/issues: First - If you were to go to settings and scroll down to Bonus Content, (DO NOT DO THIS, im just explaining) and you enable JLPT 0 Kanji, it will download all 10000+ JLPT kanji. The issue is, these kanji are factored into the “flashcards mastery: evolution” graph part of the statistics, so when I want it to display the vertical maximum on the graph, it makes the kanji ive done so far on the bottom look like a sliver, and I turn on percentage for the chart metric, it says I’ve only done 6% of all of the flashcards. Since I wont ever be doing the JLPT 0 Kanji, its now impossible for me to reach 100% on the chart, which really hurts my motivation. This is because you cant remove them from the app - so they will ruin your percentage graph. So it should be possible to either factor out the JLPT 0 kanji from the stats, or make it possible to delete the JLPT 0 kanji bonus content from the app. Second - the study streak calendar in the statistics area is really laggy if you have been using the app for more than a year - I have been using it for 2 years and 2 months now. Every time I try to click on it to open it so I can see which days I have or have not studied in the past, it freezes the app and takes 3-5 minutes to load. Third - the english translations of a lot of japanese words are in British English, I know this because of the spellings of a lot of the words- they are spelled flavour, colour, etc; which are the british spellings. Trousers is also a word in there, which is a word that is not used in american english. There are also many more instances of things like that, so if you are an american, there is a possibility of confusion when you are learning the japanese words since the english translations are in british english. There should be a british english and american english mode and it should be possible to switch between them in settings. Fourth - in the JLPT vocabulary, there is a lack of further
👍
I'm new to the Japanese language, and use this almost primarily to study. This app is very well made, excellent in fact. I recommend it to everyone as a reference for Kanji, Vocabulary, and all Kana. Shows Japanese Levels 5-1 and sorts outthose levels for Kanji, Vocabulary, and Kana. The quiz part Of this app is great. The widget for this app is for the quizzes. Love the widget! I can use it everyday on home screen to motivate me to study and take more advanced quizzes. Also has flashcard style study technique in reviewing for the exam, and also the exam is flashcard style. Try it! Buy it! You won't want to use anything else!
