High quality Japanese learning app

BobbyMcBob23 on

This app is deep. Only spent a day with it, and haven’t yet fully got to grips with it. But everything about it is well made, high quality, and it’s clear a lot of work and attention has gone into it. Every kanji has several translations for katakana and hiragana. Stats about its JLPT level, stroke count, Korean and pinyin equivalents, and lots more. You can learn kanji, kanas, reading, speaking, sounds, meaning, and lessons are heavily customisable, so you can learn in almost any way you want. Interface is well designed and visually very pleasing to work with, and I repeat, it’s so deep and customisable that after a day with the app I still haven’t got a handle on everything that it offers. I have to admit I’m not sure if there’s a Duolingo-type conversational/sentence type learning lesson structure in there (because again, it’s deep) but there is a free grammar app from the same creator. And even without that, I’d still not hesitate to give it five stars. Very well-made learning experience.

Amazing app

Very useful for practice

Pretty good with some shortcomings

Dom391 on

First of all this is a nice app overall and it very polished, so from a design and interface perspective it’s probably 5 star but… From a usability perspective it has some drawbacks compared to other programs, sites and apps available. First thing I did when opening the app was adding stuff for study, at this point in my journey I know thousands of words and hundreds of kanji so I didn’t want to go through every individual item and instead just selected multiple “levels” of stuff to add, when done I had 4000 ish items in my study list / quiz, the app doesn’t really hold your hand and tell you what it expects from you so I just set about working my way through those 4000, it didn’t seem to care how much I did in one sitting… I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or it’s the order I added things but it prioritises kanji first so even once I’d got to the 2000+ mark in the lesson or reviews I was still yet to see any vocab (even though I’d added the essentials) I’m not sure how clever this so called “AI” is but seems to me just a bit of a buzzword… afaiac this is just a SRS algorithm… anyway I plow through everything and there’s about 20% mixed in of things I truly don’t know which I ignore for now and say “i don’t know”. Now going through the kanji I do know, I did get a fair percentage wrong, the reason seems to be the meanings which I’m not used to, not sure if they are outdated and the meanings have changed over time or my other resources have twisted them to better fit English, but some of them aren’t even close to what I understand the meaning as… I used Wanikani initially btw. Similar story for some of the readings, just a few, but sometimes I fail some kanji because I don’t see the one a typically would use as “default” , these are much fewer and farther between though. In regards to the readings, it will display the latter (Chinese) as katakana, I understand why the developer has done this but can’t say I’m sure why this would be the default and could confuse beginners…. Personally I’m not fussed and I personally don’t mind the extra exposure to katakana as I typically don’t have that much exposure to it elsewhere, there may even be an option to switch this too but I’m just saying, not sure why it’s the default. Audio: When the audio is played on a given reading, sometimes the audio isn’t smooth, sometimes the robot voice over articulates something which shouldn’t be (for those who know, think in your head how daisuke sounds ie. Dai-ski, then

Great for learning to draw kanji

Lucyypo on

The app is easy to use, I recommend it. I like that you can also search kanji by drawing them, which can be useful when you see something but don’t know what it means or how it is pronounced.

I love this app!

Bot475445 on

This app has really helped me with my Japanese. I find that the flashcards and the ability to create list are really helpful! I haven't just bought the subscription but i am sure I will soon. ありがとうございました。勉強が好きです。

Very useful and easy to use app!

Cesca.m on

Whenever I need to know vocab or Kanji i search it up on this app. It's also a good app to practice and review words/kanji !! You can also learn hirigana and katakana on here!

How do you make lists?

ARMADILLA-13 on

This app looks good but I don’t know how to add any words to my list, there is no option to add cards to the list so it just says 0 entry. Am I missing something or is there a bug? Any help would be great thanks.

Great!!!!!!

It doesn’t actually teach me

dogpadledogpadle on

I know zero Japanese and it doesn’t teach me anything, it just gives me a question and then tells me if I’m right or wrong!

Excellent App in all regards

Elon messed up buying twitter on

Would like a list of radicals and what kanji they form a part of and data sync across devices but apart from that it’s a top-notch app. Can’t wait to see new features being added in the future. Syncs well with Tae Kims guide as well. Edit: Would like it if the handwriting recognition was better, and if there was an internal notepad to make notes.
