Crashes very often

Kilipoo20 on

I really like this app. So much in fact, that I bought the pro version (for the first time ever, for any app). What really annoys me though, that it really crashes very often when learning kanji through the quiz module. I practice kanji that I got wrong in the „draw practice“ part of the quiz, and every second kanji or so the app crashes and I have to start over… More feedback: I’d love to be able to sync my progress between devices. At home I practice on my iPad, but when I’m not at home I use my phone. It’d be great if I could sync my progress between devices. Otherwise I’m really happy, the constant crashing really dampens the mood though.

Exactly what I was looking for

viivii🦈 on

I’ve been looking for an app like this for years. I’m using the paid subscription version of the app and I absolutely don’t regret it. I struggle with the katakana for a few months now since I just started but the app has helped me to slowly get behind those. I’m hoping to use the app additionally to other mediums and classes I’m taking, mostly for studying between commutes that take a lot of time, so that I can take my N5 next year confidently

Rückschritt zu Kana App?

Hawk30100 on

Incrazyboyy on

Die App unterstützt mich hervorragend beim Vokabeln lernen, auch die Eingabe durchs Zeichnen finde ich super! Ich empfehle die App gerne weiter, aber leider ist sie nur unter iOS verfügbar. Außerdem würde ich mir ein Feature zur Synchronisation zwischen Handy und Tablet wünschen, damit ich auf beiden Geräten lernen kann.

Great design, good funtions, big flaws

Johntra Wolter on

Using the app for almost a year now with lifetime premium and I want to love it so much but I can‘t. I sometimes cannot find vocabulary from books for example, they just do not exist in the database. The SRS can be the best but it doesn‘t work if the vocabulary I need to learn just isn‘t there. On the other hand, lots of entries are duplicates if you add the premium content, which can cause a little chaos creating custom lists. Searching for words or kanji sometimes is just reaaally slow and the flashcard management sometimes is quite complicated. But the biggest problem by far is the missing synchronization between devices. I want to use both iPhone and iPad but it doesn‘t work without creating the same list twice and even if I would do so, the stats will of course be separate. This coud be the best app out there for learning Japanese, but it isn‘t yet. Still happy to support it but wondering if anything of those major points will be improved as it hasn‘t been for almost a year. Please add a sync feature and a possibility to add own content and it will be just perfect. (If there is any feature I‘m missing here please tell me.)

A wonderful app

Olivertus on

This is a sorted and helpful app, which is in combination of pen and paper a real helping hand in learning stuff. It’s not about Bering quick but to learn the stuff, and it does right this :)

Excellent App

Jayer7 on

I don’t review apps often, but this one really impressed me. It provides lots of interesting information on kanji, vocabulary and kana, all while being nicely structured, so you don’t get lost. You have a smart and completely customisable algorithm for studying any kanji you want to learn, reminding you of revisions when the time is right. I also appreciate that the UI is simply nice to look at - makes the whole experience really enjoyable. Plus: no random or intrusive ads - only for the pro functions. If I could improve something, perhaps I’d make it a little easier to delete flashcards from FlexSRS (a lot of taps) and the voice reading out the kanjis seems a little robotic to me. But honestly the developer did a great job on this and they deserve all the support for their work.

Horrible text-to-speech, bad multiple choice

njStryfe on

Update: a year later and the text-to-speech is still terrible. In this age of human-like speech generation this is really unacceptable. It is so bad that often the words are barely intelligible. The nonsensical multiple-choice options also haven’t been improved. Obviously there is no will to improve the app apart from adding flashy animations during the tutorial. Do not buy this as a beginner, or as a learner at any level, for that matter. Original review: The Japanese text-to-speech voice used to read vocabulary is truly horrendous and makes a lot of genuine mistakes, which is quite bad for new learners. Why the app doesn’t use the much better built-in TTS voices when the are already installed on the device is beyond me. Also many of the vocabulary words make little sense without the context of at least one usage example. And the answers given in the multiple choice format often leave only one possible option - at least limit the wrong answers to nouns for nouns, adjectives for adjectives, etc. Finally, the only way to leave feedback is through the developer’s twitter account, which is one of those bad modern customer support habits that are spreading everywhere. Two stars for the good spaced repetition implementation and the UI. Wish I hadn’t spent money on this app, though.
