Magic Earth Navigation & Maps Reviews

Very good app but one CarPlay shortcoming

jbphil1 on

I love the maps in this app. Very good detail and great to look at. My only problem is when using CarPlay. I can’t see a list of upcoming turns either on the CarPlay screen or on my iPhone.

Using via CarPlay

Trying this in my motorhome in France. Running on a 9” CarPlay screen. I like a few things about it like the option to select from a range of voices (and it works well unlike some competitors voices). The way it changes from 3D to a more 2D when approaching intersections, then back to 3D. Not so good is the routing. It will not default to truck so I have to select it each time. Despite putting my width in, it often takes me down tracks barely wide enough for my motorhome and often when there is a better alternative. Comparing it to my TomTom Go Camper sat Nav the truck routing is awful. So bad I’ve stopped using it.

Google Maps replacement but…..

Magic Earth is my go to app for navigation and is a very capable replacement or companion to Google Maps. However the map updates are horrendous, I still have not had the updates for the eastern half of Australia that took less than 5-6 hours to complete. The developers claim this is due to the popularity of the app and the load on the update servers, still even weeks after the app update the servers still seem to be overloaded. 5-6 hours is too long for an average 1gigabyte map update.

Love This App

Have used this app for a few years now and always great. I have noticed though that when on full screen Apple CarPlay on an Alpine Branded Unit that the Speedo & Current Speed is covered by the box that indicates next turn and if no next turn box the Current Speed Indicator is covered by the CarPlay Apps List down the Right Hand edge of the screen.

Almost there

This navigation mag is very good. There is one issue that has to be fixed - when the phone is plugged to a car that has Apple CarPlay the sound should automatically come up in the car’s speakers. Instead the app keeps asking to put the phone in the vertical position. Even if the phone sits vertically the sound still doesn’t come up in the car’s speakers. Please check this. Otherwise it works well.

Just wow

Have used quite a few gps apps over my time, being hooked on a rather expensive paid one for some time now. Then last month I stumbled over Magic earth. Just wow. Everything else my dearly paid app does plus some more. Particularly the auto routing is brilliant finding options no other app has done thus far. Great 3D views which is great for where I live. Thumbs up, keep it coming!!

Fantastic navigation love the topographic display wish live traffic was better

Great gps navigation app works well on new iPhone 12 as well as my old iPhone 6s on iOS 15.5 also works on iPad mini 2 cellular on iOS 12. Probably the nicest map display of any of the gps apps available love the 3D topographic rendering of hills etc. Two things I’d like to see improved is the display of live traffic to be more like Waze or TomTom. And to display up to date camera locations. Note my comments apply to use in Australia.

No apple watch map download

There is no option to download maps to apple watch, which is the reason i got the app.

Great App

The App works very well. Enjoy using it. Would love to see a compass and Altimeter be included on the App. Thanks.

The Apple play GPS I ever wanted

Jale Johnsky on

Australia

Magic Earth is the best Apple Play GPS app for me so far. I recommend this app. It resembles my previous Tomtom XL GPS because it has convincing 3D view, point accuracy in direction and clear map graphics. It does not freeze during long operation and the audio assist is very clear. Road reporting is also straightforward and quick. However, as maybe only few drivers are using Magic Earth, I don’t get road reports. Sometimes I use the popular one (Wa..) because many road reports come in with it. I hope this app may become popular soon so many road reports will show up. It’s on me to SHARE this app to gain popularity. Thanks Magic Earth.
