Glorified flash card app

Chad Mulligan on

United Kingdom

Mango languages is essentially a flash card app. While it walks you through a number of “lessons” where you’re shown a word, given the translation then shown the word again, there’s no actual testing. You just press a button and it shows you the answer without logging whether or not you remembered it. The review section is marginally more useful in that it is basically a spaced repetition app with high quality audio and the option to record your own voice. However the interface is a little underwhelming and again the flash cards are just showing you the word then asking if you correctly remembered it. There’s no element of testing at all. If you’re looking to learn a less commonly spoken language then this is maybe worth a try - the audio and translation quality seems trustworthy. However for more commonly spoken languages there are many more engaging apps on the market.

Best Language App out there

JulesYorks on

I really like this app.. and I’ve tried pretty much all the major language apps out there and this is the best one The only thing that would make it any better is if there was a sliding scale for the speech speed. Especially on the longer sentences. Trying to keep up with some of the longer sentences can be quite challenging. … Otherwise, two thumbs up!

They have Jesus’ language for free!

I was looking to learn a bit of Aramaic but forgot about it for lack of resources till I downloaded mango. It was one of the few free courses to my luck!!! It’s Chaldean Aramaic- a dialect of the language Jesus spoke.

Flawed but useful

I’ve been learning Malay and this app seemed like one of my only options for this. It has a nice interface and it has been an entertaining experience so far (once I turned off the infuriating narrator’s often irrelevant banter), but after a few months of learning it’s just removed half of my completed chapters so I’ve had to go through all of them and manually sort it after an update which has been a pain. There hasn’t been much grammar support so far, with there being a few occasions where sentence structure changes or an alternative word is used and it isn’t clear why, so I aren’t sure how well I will be able to structure my own sentences. Also it’s pretty annoying being told you’re wrong where there is more than one word for something, or a word has multiple meanings, and it isn’t clear which one you’re being asked.

The best app to learn a language

This truly is a fantastic language learning app. Better than Memrise, which I subscribed to earlier, and found not very useful. The lesson are well structured and help you get conversant in a very short time.

Would be nice if more stuff were free

I am someone who is passionate about learning languages but does not have the money to pursue lessons. If there were another way to support I.e by watching ads or donating or even through invitations it would be better than paying monthly which is what all apps seem to do.Especiallt since were in a crisis and everyone is locked in it would be a lot better if it were free and in the future I would like to pursue languages and make them them free on the App Store/online someday. But it is a great way to learn especially if someone struggled with Word orders and needed tips on how to structure a sentence.

Brilliant app

While designed for beginners, even advanced speakers will benefit greatly from the pronunciation functionality. I never realised how much I could improve my pronunciation till I started with this app. Also good for internalising spanish speech patterns.

Good language varietyre

Am working my way through Hungarian and find the reviews helpful. The lessons make the difficult sentence structure less daunting and the features of the app are well thought out.
