Midori (Japanese Dictionary) Reviews

Invaluable for learning

Wolfmarimba on

This app is amazing for learning Japanese! It's a dictionary at its core but it's so much more. You can save words into custom folders, look words and kanji up using your camera, or even draw character in. My favourite way of using this is to take pictures of vocab and kanji in the grammar book I'm learning from (Tobira Beginning Japanese), and save them into folders by Lesson, Then, the app makes you flash cards of the content and there is even SRS if that's your thing. One thing to note: I saw reviews here that there is no audio to listen to how words are pronounced. I don't know if this is a new feature since, but the way to listen to a word is to double-tap on the word and a small menu pops up with the option to listen. This is very easy to miss so not the best usability (I found this by accident), so just something to look out for. The app has a lot of features and you need to explore to get familiar/find them all, so a bit of a learning curve. But it's completely free and packed with features so can't really fault it!

No sound

What’s the point of this app if there’s not going to be any sound to help with pronounciation

Simply the best

I shopped around and this is the best Japanese learning app and dictionary there is. The interface is clean, the flash card system works, Being able to learn words and kanji by JLPT is good.

Keeps crashing

peekatchuu on

Keeps crashing when I try to save my bookmarks as a CSV and support never respond! Update: still the same error, DO NOT BUY THIS APP IF YOU WANT TO CONVERT YOUR SAVED WORDS TO FLASHCARDS

Great dictionary

Gallery Hakon on

This dictionary was recommended to me, and it has yet to disappoint. Finding characters by writing on the screen is a particularly useful feature, and - despite what another review says - it can also find 完ぺき, both from just writing the pronunciation or using handwriting recognition.

Brilliant!

This is easily the best language dictionary I have seen for any language in any medium. It is a great reference tool but also works brilliantly as a learning tool, with clear and helpful examples of usage, easy cross-referencing, the ability to build vocabulary lists and the ability to search by conjugated forms. The technology is both impressive and intuitive. Great value. Only wish I had bought it sooner.

Amazing

Love using this app! I use it everyday and it gets better and better with every update! I like it doesn't require you to know the stroke order. Live saver!

A great resource for studying Japanese

I've had this app for a couple of years now and it's been awesome. Simple to use, loads of examples for each entry and it's also continually improving!

Flawless

Suchuu on

United Kingdom

A lot of new features have been added recently (searching by sentences is a favourite of mine) and all great. Now that the handwriting feature can recognise kanji in an incorrect stroke order this app is pretty much flawless.

Excellent

Comprehensive, uncluttered and incredibly fast. I remember suffering through my slow, blurry electronic dictionary and its borderline worthless Genius 3rd Edition dictionary for J-E and E-J. This completely surpasses it for a tiny fraction of the price.
