Midori (Japanese Dictionary) Reviews

Very helpful

The dictionary provides a couple of example sentences for each of its entries. Thus, I get a much better feeling of meaning and use of the phrase. Looked up words are stored in a list. So, I can copy and memorize the words sometimes later. Compared to Jisho, Midori is not that good in breaking down a sentence in its parts.

great dictionary

You get a great value for the price, I use this dictionary all the time. Large amount of vocabulary including example sentences, function to copy vocabulary into a file for personal list, marks copied vocabulary so you don't copy more than once, easy migration of personal vocabulary list after buying new Ipad, only down part is recognition of hand-written kanji is a little weak. Definitely recommended!

Awesome!

This app is just awesome! It's so super useful, it has so many entries and it's so easy to look up words, learn Kanjies etc.. Please add iCloud support for bookmarks in the next update! :)

Excellent dictionary, flashcards, with JLPT info

Very powerful electronic dictionary! I was using only the dictionary called "Japanese" until today, but it has 2 flaws which are fulfilled by "Midori": 1) "Midori" provides "hand writing" style animation (not print-character style). 2) "Midori" indicate the new JLPT level (N1-N5) for all kanjis. This is a great companion for my study. Thank you for this great app!!

Good

Good app. I wish the app would use the iPhone’s “Spoken Content” settings. When you highlight a sentence and tap “speak” within the app, the app will unfortunately use Kyoko, a very old Japanese speech voice setting and doesn’t recognize the iPhone’s internal speech settings (my iPhone 14 Pro uses female Siri for Spoken Content but the app doesn’t use it).

Wish the camera could do vertical text

I have been using Midori for years but have to say that the “scan/photo” function that I have been using more recently has transformed its effectiveness

Amazing

Been using this dictionary app for years, definitely the best dictionary on iOS.

Good but with some errors

This is a very extensive dictionary! However there are some issues: when I was looking up the verb nagusameru, it did not show up, even though it is a valid verb. In general it can sometimes not display all the possible words for a given definition (like not listing oyatsu as a word for snack) so it definitely needs some work.
