Great app for tracking your finances

Needs some TLC

Moneydance has been around for many years, but progress on the app and Mac usability side is slow. To be frank, the developers should be ashamed of the features and usability of this app. For example, it lacks some basic customisations that would help usability. And it sometimes crashes for no reason. Thankfully, features are much better on the Mac version, so the app is just a very stripped down companion for handy viewing and quick transaction entry. I think the company needs to hire someone with better usability skills, to make the Mac and app versions easier to use, more visually attractive, and more like native Mac and iOS apps. There are occasional signs of brilliance: on the Mac their QIF file importing is phenomenally good (very important for me as an ex Microsoft Money user), and their Reporting tool is good (but not quite as flexible as Money). On the app, the data entry is ugly, but quite clever in minimising keystrokes (e.g. selecting payee and category simultaneously). It’s almost as if someone in the company cares about usability, but they might be fighting against others who don’t prioritise it enough. To compete in this space, an app has to look good, conform to the usability guidelines of the platform, support the user with customisations of views, and deliver the core functionality with rock solid reliability. Sadly, it looks like the developers have given up on this app.

When it works it’s great

Many times the app freezes. Most annoying

Excellent app

I’ve been using Money Dance for years, since Microsoft stopped supporting Money. It’s an excellent application that is so easy to use. Love that it seamlessly synchronises across my phone, tablet and computer.

Almost, but not quite…

I’ve spent days configuring my accounts and inputting data and repeat transactions and all works well, but…. The desktop versions are fine but the limited mobile app functionality is preventing me from pulling the trigger and purchasing! For example, why does the app only sort transactions in reverse date order - it makes no sense? The Desktop apps default to sorting in ascending date order whilst the IOS apps sort the other way round, with no way to reverse the order - incredibly frustrating! Also the mobile app doesn’t allow for creating categories (or anything else really) and is just a window to account status with limited transaction input options and no access to scheduled (or reminders as Moneydance call them) transactions. A real shame as I was about to purchase.

Absolutely rubbish

I’ve been reporting problems the developers for about 10 years, and they completely ignore customer feedback. For the past 25 minutes I’ve been trying to create a transaction with 13 splits on it and it just goes wrong. Mixed up Payment/ Deposit settings, wrong amounts, description from the last transaction showing as the main description, and therefore overwriting the Payee name. So frustrating so now I’ll have to wait until I arrive home from my trip so I can do it on my laptop. Also I’ve been requesting thousand separators for years, again completely ignored. The desktop version is reasonable, but well overpriced. If you just want a Mobile version of this type of app and not the ability to sync with Desktop, there are far better products out there.

Missing exchange rate

axeplayloud on

it's not possibile to enter an exchange rate, or simply enter a currency conversion in the app. For example I need to debit one account by $100 and credit the other account by €90. Nowadays multi currency is a must. It seems to be possible from the desktop app only which is a big limitation.

Hoorah!

Update September 2023 Still find the app useful but it keeps freezing and then taking time to restart and often loses the the most recent inputted transaction. A useful addition to the full desktop version especially as you can sync the two. The only problem is that as you can't have split windows on the i pad you have to switch between Moneydance and the banking sites. I overcame this by checking my bank accounts on my i phone and entering them on the Moneydance on the i pad. I need never leave my armchair again!

Desktop version is excellent but app is buggy

I’ve been using Moneydance for years - ever since Microsoft and Quicken packed their UK financial bags. I love the functionality of the desktop version, particularly the multi currency features but the app needs a lot of work. Changing an existing transaction is a nightmare and syncing is patchy. But I won’t be changing anytime soon.

Good App

I have using Moneydance for many years, I like the way it syncs with the desktop application on my Mac through iCloud. It would be nice if the mobile app had more functionality such as adding splits to new payments and allowing you to amend or add new transaction reminders. I would also like to see all assets, liabilities and investments and to be able to drill down into the detail of a transaction.I feel it is the best on the market and will continue to use this software.
