Onkyo Controller FAQ
Is Onkyo Controller free?
Yes, Onkyo Controller is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Onkyo Controller legit?
⚠️ The Onkyo Controller app has poor ratings and negative feedback. Users seem unsatisfied with its performance or features.
Update: I recently posted about my issues connecting to the app when trying to use Airplay. Here’s what I learned. I have 3 Onkyo receivers in my home and all were giving me issues when it came to airplay. After speaking with support on many occasions about my issues they decided that I should send the RZ70 for repair. I decided to play around with the receiver before I sent it out. What I came to find out was that all my receivers were set to LOCK in settings. I would lock it so no one would mess with the settings. So I decided to set it to UNLOCK in the settings on all my receivers and guess what, all my issues went away, and now airplay works great on all 3. In conclusion, I think when you have the receiver set to LOCK it blocks the receiver from communicating with the app.
Why is it that I'm always having problems connecting to the app? I had problems with my RZ3100 and now with the RZ70. Both have issues connecting. So that means I can never connect to airplay when I need to. Please fix this issue. I hate having to reboot my equipment every time I want to use airplay or use the app.
Alexa does NOT play music on RZ50 receiver
I used the Onkyo Controller app (on iPhone 12) to set up Alexa, as given in the instructions. The last step in setup is to confirm if Alexa will play music by giving it a voice command, with buttons for “yes” and “no”. When I give the voice command, Alexa responds by saying it “can’t find any device named [device name] that can play music.” I push the “no” button, and the app then displays a Google Drive folder with no contents - i don't know what the app developer intended but this is a completely inappropriate response, offering no help or next steps to try. There is a “done” button, which takes me back to the previous screen.
After some tinkering in the Alexa app, i was finally able to see the receiver as a device, and was able to stream Amazon Music via the Alexa app, but no sound from the receiver (the receiver display shows the music stream) and Alexa still cant play music via voice command. So not only is the app useless at resolving the problem, the receiver also seems incompatible with whatever music format is being streamed. To say I’m disappointed and very frustrated after at least 8 hours of googling and effort is gross understatement.
The app does a decent job otherwise of controlling the receiver, hence two stars instead of one.
Buggiest app I’ve ever used
This app I wretched. It will work intermittently when at all. Constantly losing connectivity to the receiver and dropping one or both zones. Onkyo, if you read these reviews, please address this problem. I’m about ready to return the receiver and go with a different product altogether
If only zero star was an option
Your hardware is impressive, but the app experience needs attention. Improving the app's functionality and reliability would significantly enhance the overall product. Consistent issues with connectivity detract from the user experience and undermine your potential as an industry leader. Invest in your app team to ensure a smoother, more seamless user experience.
Constant Issues
I constantly lose connection between the receiver and my phone. The only solution is to unplug my receiver, reboot, and go through the pairing process again. Not acceptable for a flagship receiver.
Terrible user interface
I just purchased two 6100’s and I am about to return them both because of how bad the app UI is. I never understood how a company like Onkyo could build such a nice receiver, but can’t spend a few grand in app development.
Still lacks airplay controls
This app has not been updated in six months. Listening to music via airplay on my TX-NR6100, Zone1 is vastly different than on Zone2. Z2 even with latest updated app still lacks speaker level/balance and tone (treble, voice & bass) controls when playing music. Even my iphone volume button works on Z1 but not on Z2. Z2 should be made to work just like Z1 so you can make adjustments to music based on environment. Both zones need to add speaker LR balance as well. ONKYO has great products but the quality of the Controller app diminishes the value of this receiver. These changes are needed to significantly increase the listening experience. I emailed the company several months ago and they indicated they would pass this along to their technical team. Nothing yet.
Mal producto
He tenido por buena marca lo que es el onkyo lastimosamente no se puede utilizar con la aplicación y lo que es en C el amplificador deja mucho que desear ni con el control remoto se puede controlar
Requires rebooting receiver
I use an iPad to control my TX-NR6050 receiver. I find that about once a day I have to reboot my receiver in order to maintain connection between my receiver and the network (otherwise both my phone and iPad show a connection error). It isn’t clear to me if this is a hardware or software issue on the receiver, but it does mean that you have to be able to plug and unplug your receiver so you cannot hide the power cable. Hopefully Onkyo will fix this issue soon. I have the same setup with a Yamaha receiver and have not experienced the issue.
Very disappointing
I’ve had their receivers for quite a few years in my basement.i always ran into issues with this app. And for the first time I’m in my basement, trying to listen to some calming music and the app won’t even open. Well deserve of one star
