O'Reilly FAQ
Is O'Reilly free?
Yes, O'Reilly is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is O'Reilly legit?
🤔 The O'Reilly app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
1. Playlist is weird, sometimes only one item inside and sometimes have error to clicking the time in some lists
2. Highlight is duplicated instead of combining two when they overlapped, this is disasters when u output them.
3. Too easy to open the link with browser while reading, it is quite shocking sometime if you have no intention to click it, please provide an option of “you want to open the link? OK/ Cancel”
4. Best if Apple Pencil drawing is supported, there are lots of code and descriptions we have to link them up, such a small improvement can greatly improve the learning efficiency.
5. Browsing the books in the apps is more difficult than from Amazon website, no rating and non user friendly categories system making me missed lots of good books here, luckily I can go to Amazon to find a book and then come back here….(so inefficient!)
Always not working when launching the app after putting it to background for some time
Always not working when launching the app after putting it to background for some time.
It will just show you loading screen, and even if the content is loaded, you may not be able to navigate back to the main menu.
There was a case I have to reinstall the app because I couldn’t go back to the main menu even after killing the app for several times.
Not user friendly in reading book
Issue 1: no clock when reading(in Kindle, there is an option to enable it so that I can check the time while reading without any manual action)
Issue 2: After clicking to somewhere else(e.g. reference), then the bottom for getting back to the previous page does not go to the previously reading page exactly. It just go to that chapter, but not exactly the location that I have been reading
Issue 3: after selecting a word for translation, the highlight is still on. If I want to cancel the highlight, then the upper menu and the lower menu will pop up, which may cover the sight of reading the content.
Bug after switching between apps
It auto scrolls up to several pages back whenever I switch to another app and then switch back, and i have to scroll down again and again to where I was reading every time! This is so annoying! Could you please fix this bug?
Always loses downloads
I downloaded materials successfully but the next day when I tried to read them they’re gone. Happened many times. Please fix.
Need this app so much!
I love this app as I get to read many of the books I love, and the best part is cos they are all ePub I get my computer to read them out to me. Very dyslexic and there are not much app can do so now. A big thanks to O’Reilly.
Super important and useful app but needs more work
First of all I love O’Reilly Safari membership, I used to buy and own tons of paper and kindle books. However when I started using Safari I realised I can switch to reading all technical books in electronic format (before I deferred to reading technical material mostly in paper) and it was the main reason I recently bought IPad Pro. I am happy to say that the experience of reading of technical books in O’Reilly app on iPad is even better than paper. However there are few caveats that I would like suggest app creators to work on:
1. when I download the book in the app, the format of that book is very different than the one reading online. I would say download option is extremely important feature, unfortunately downloaded format is not good enough so if I want to have a proper responsive experience with similar formatting I have to remove book from downloaded and load it online each time.
2. I think if you invest a bit more time into supporting Apple pen/other stylus you can win huge crowd of users that like me before prefer to read physical paper book because of highlighting, drawing etc. There is already support for highlights and making notes, but it does not work very seamlessly (for highlighting it selects one word and then I need to resize selection area and then choose to highlight) . Also there is no option for drawing, annotations etc. It would be great for example if I could circle some elements or draw on margins. Basically making it more like people highlight/annotate physical books would be amazing and I think it would make a lot of users switch from buying physical technical books to using safari.
3. I have noticed some errors (error box about loading pops up and ask to “cancel/retry”). Sometimes app was stack loading or downloading content and could not do much about it. They don’t stop from using the app but definitely impact experience and waste time.
Btw I saw some comments about infinite scrolling, actually I love how it works in the O’Reilly App now. I think It’s much better than pagination reading in Kindle, especially when using Apple Pen. So personally I would not remove it but perhaps give users option to switch to paginated flow if they want.
Overall its a super useful app so I hope feature development and improvement for it will be prioritised by O’Reilly as soon as possible.
pagination wanted
Reading a book on this app is like reading a web page on web browser in 1990s. Infinite vertical scrolling feels so bad. Please introduce paginated reading. Checkout Kindle or Acrobat Reader.
Why don’t work like “Safari to go”
I have used “Safari to go” before, so I feel disappointe with this interface.
