O'Reilly FAQ
Is O'Reilly free?
Yes, O'Reilly is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is O'Reilly legit?
🤔 The O'Reilly app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
The app is lazily done. No text layout options (justify, left, etc), no font selection (kindle has, like 10-15 fonts), eye hurting backgrounds (grey, sepia, black?). Most of your subscribers have some sort of eye issues because they stare at screens for 16 hours a day and you have this high-school project app representing O'Reilly which costs us, your subscribers, hundreds of €€€ every year? Maybe it's time to look at the competition. Improve it or you'll be dropping subscribers. You can use the AI that you're trying to put everywhere on how to do it.
Early access is great, but has no narration or TTS support yet.
I like being able to read new releases in advance and follow curated play lists about advanced topics, that’s really great!
But I miss support for text to speech or book narration!
Endless scroll instead of page turn
The settings for the app are lackluster and there are keyboard bindings rather than configurable touch controls such as tap and swipe.
App crashes continually
The app is no longer being updated for iOS 12.5.1? I think serious bug fixes should be dropped back because older iPads are stuck on on 12. The app is currently unusable.
Needs further work
Not terrible, but needs some work. Should be able to side swipe, not scroll endlessly... please add in next release ! :)
Annoying rate requests
I’m paying for this service so why the hell am I getting requests to rate the damn app. Not cool. Not cool at all.
Don’t download books
The only way to use this trash app, is to not download any books to your device. If you do, you will be unable to read them due to app crashes and or just spinning wheels.
For such a reputable company, this product is complete garbage and has been for at least the last year with very little changes.
Great content, horrible app quality
I absolutely love the content, but absolutely hate app quality.
Please stop adding features and focus on app quality. There is so many frequent problems:
- App freezing on book chapter change
- Unable to view certain chapters of downloaded books (read errors popping up)
- Book download is taking ages on high speed internet
- App crashing
- Search recently started showing crap results (search for 'scala' returning book chapters while numbers of books titled Scala exist)
- ...
Bring back Safari Online
Pretty much everything about the new app (and service in general) is terrible. For a company whose main business is technical books, they seem to have no idea how technical people want to access books. We don’t queue them up in “playlists” so we can read them on our phone. We dip in and out of trusted sources to check things when we need to. But there’s no good way to just keep a few “piles” of books around like there used to be, to (for example) refer to on youriPad while working on your desktop.
Usage issues
I have got disconnected from a live training course without reasons and impossible to connect back in even if trying different browse + log out log in
Also very painful to download books and/or create playlists and adding books to them. Application not responsive and slow
