Reviews

extremely low features for a pdf reading app

neal _ios on

1. the good part is just syncing papers metadata 2. apart from that, every single feature that youl’d expect from a pdf reading app are missing. please use other note taking apps as reference and add more customizations, selection options, pen options. 3. The company seems to focus on metadata sync as USP and rest of the experience is pretty poor. Atleast a review of other note taking apps is necessary to see shortcomings

Genuinely happy how nice this is

AdamDivekar on

I read a lot of papers. This is the only cross-platform app I’ve found which really works. It’s fast and the annotations are super useful. It has a few quirks (e.g. syncing annotations sometimes gets triggered in the middle of writing them) but so long as you download the paper, go on airplane mode to read and annotate, it’s super smooth.

Problem with Tags

horizonKC on

This is an excellent app and is invaluable for researchers like me. I have been using Papers since version 1. I rely heavily on tags to classify my papers. Unfortunately, the ReadCube ios and PadOS app cannot search tags in the side bar like the desktop version can. Also in the column view you cannot activate a column to view tags. Neither can you apply a particular tag to multiple selected papers. Hope this is fixed soon. I have been waiting for it. Thanks.

Excellent reference manager

My experience after trying out Papers3 is highly satisfying. Some improvement is always possible. When we try to create lists with different tiers, although the right pull-down list is arranged alphabetically, selection of a list title is easy at the entry stage of the article. However, many times it is essential to check under which major title a particular list title is available or for modifying its position under a different group or even for directly going to the list title for editing a list title in the darkened left panel of the displayed list is difficult - one has to scroll through the entire list for locating it. If a search button is provided for directly going to a particular list, it would be highly useful. I do not see any modifications to accommodate my view expressed above. Perhaps the feasibility is limited to consider this view.

Major improvements needed

riteshrocks001 on

It is a very nice app, but many features of the web-based app of desktop are missing here like ratings and colour tags of the paper are not shown in this app. Also, supplementary files for some of the papers do not appear, which is weird. It would be great if it gives option for making different shapes such as rectangle in annotation.

Great App, a must for researchers

Ashok Raichur on

ReadCube is neat app which catalogs journal articles with the attachments. In fact any PDF file can be catalogued. For journal articles, one can read them, do markings, highlighting and share with others via email. More importantly, for researchers, the citation metrics are right here in the app. For serious researchers on the go, ReadCube is a must on all platforms.

Helps organise PDFs Annotations and notes Very useful

Excellent. Needs some fixes though.

ndraichura on

Let me start by saying that ReadCube is just fantastic... The best research app I have come across. Inbuilt browser, inbuilt google scholar and pubmed search, and inbuilt PDF reader are unique and handy features, not available in other free research apps. The desktop and Mac app is much better then iOS app... Mac app gets five stars from me. iOS app needs some fixes. I am not able to type in the address bar of the built in browser. The search function (Google scholar and pubmed) is unstable and goes blank repeatedly, needing frequent restarts. Mac and iOS apps need some improvements with bibliography function. Some scripts (like Vancouver superscript) do not translate to the correct and exact bibliographic style, needing manual correction. Overall, excellent. ReadCube developers, keep up the good work. Thanks for making research work less difficult and more organized.
