A+

Great app, it’s always a bit tough reading papers on a phone but this works pretty well syncing to computer and all that, would highly recommend a read out/speak feature be added, I’m using Siri or speechify right now but an in house reader option would be phenomenal

Pretty good!

Sync just works. Annotations work well but would like freeform pencil support.

ReadCube Papers failure on iPad

Jephary on

I’m committed to ReadCube on my desktop. It works well. But until recently I’ve done most of my reading on my iPad version. Several months ago this became hugely frustrating and I have had to stop. Simple tasks like highlighting, or writing a note using Apple pencil now cause the app to stall for many minutes. Any editing of previously made mark-ups has the same effect. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app and library. Syncing takes some time but still works. Nothing however fixes the app from stalling and locking the screen while highlighting, underlining or writing in a pdf. This was the whole point of the iPad experience. I’m considering alternatives, but not looking forward to losing all or part of my 13,000 paper library. Damn shame.

Frustrating text selection and contrived UI experiment

Marcel.Turcotte on

I'm not sure why the UI on iPadOS is so different (and limited) from that on macOS. The folder collection's hierarchical structure has been flattened. The text selection engine on both platforms is infuriating. I understand that PDF does not preserve the text structure, but many applications do a better job when selecting text. It's unfortunate because, while the iPad Pro 12.9 inch M2 is the ultimate reading machine, reading papers in ReadCube can be extremely frustrating at times. Most of the time, I simply prefer to use the Web application.

Bugs bugs and more bugs

I have been using Papers for a few years now and am remiss to move to another app because I have everything organized on Papers. As an acadamic who relies on PDF notation and organization, I can say that this app has been extremely frustrating to use on many occassions where I have spent hours (connected online by the way) notating PDFs, only to open the app the next day to see the work wasn't saved. This has happened numerous times, and I am just about done and ready to find something more reliable. I'm using the app on a new iPad incidentally. Lastly, I don't understand for the life of me why they can't add a bookmark feature - since so many times you leave a document on the page you were reading, only to reopen the app and find it is back at the beginning. Adding a bookmark feature would save us readers much time and make up for this other glitch that happens regularly.

Buggy and comically limited annotation features

bill_joy on

Repeated crashes, incorrect automatic meta data fetching with no easy way to revert, no undo or eraser for annotation, slow cloud synch. This is a step backward from Papers.

Getting there…

Artek2000 on

I was pleasantly surprised by the speed of synchronisation. My concern about that was what was holding me back from switching from the legacy papers app. Running very smoothly and no major new functions that I can rave about. On the other hand, there is a major issue with how authors’ names are listed. First name is integrated into of the name, so if you ask to sort by name, the sort will happen according the first name, which is totally useless. This is a pretty basic issue that should be fixed ASAP.

best app for researchers

MSLZH1018 on

ReadCube really helps me A LOT! I can search, store, manage and share literature very conveniently, saving a lot of time.

Useless

thoozoon on

Apple Pencil does not work with this app.

Would be better if PDF reader improved

protists on

Highlighting text results inability to select text or link to references. Poor usability on iPad - not possible to link to institutional proxy in iOS app, and writing with apple pen is impossible
