Description

Practice Japanese writing with Skritter, whether you have a strong grasp of written Japanese and want to remember the characters better or are a beginner who doesn’t know where to start.

Skritter has existed for more than 10 years, and for a good reason: our learners are amazing! They help us with feedback, which allows us to create what we think is the best Japanese writing app out there!

Japanese writing uses three different scripts; Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Skritter offers all three and you can learn them through our “decks” (similar to a card deck) based on topics and difficulty.

Deck examples:
- Survival Japanese (for traveling in Japan)
- Food and drinks (learn to understand the menus at your favorite Japanese restaurant with delicious sushi, ramen, and other dishes)
- Cultural topics like Samurai Japanese
- More advanced topics like foreign policy
- And many more…

First, you learn a character’s meaning, then practice drawing it and before you know it, you’ll want to learn thousands of characters, and words like these two happy users:

“If I could only keep one app on my iPod, this would be it without a doubt. Skritter will change your life!”
― Wendy Werneth, UN Translator

“Learning to write characters has never been so fun. From writing zero to 2000+ characters in six months!”
― Brian Jackson, Economist

Amazing new updates

Marcella Cooper on

I’ve had Skritter for a long time now and I thought it was good before. But now with the new platform and options for studying, it’s gotten so much better beyond my wildest dreams! My favourite is testing just the words that I get incorrect - so effective. I highly recommend this app.

Poor design for iPad

Brodie_A on

The character input area is enormous on an iPad, to the point that it makes it extremely difficult to input strokes accurately. I don’t write letters four inches high, why would I want to learn to write kanji that way? It seems like it would be bad for retention as well, as you’re engaging gross motor skills versus fine.

Um... yeah

The fact that this app is so interactive is awesome. Learning to read and write the characters is going to be so incredibly helpful if you plan on immersing yourself in the language. Totally recommending this.

Really helpful!

Webdragon444 on

This app has been incredible! I’ve finally started getting the hang of kanji thanks to this app, and being able to practice writing is really helpful for remembering the characters. This is much better then the textbook I bought, and I will definitely be recommending this to my friends!

Very well done!

Whoops I’m dumb, anyways it’s actually very well done I just totally forgot the difference between two hiraganas, anyways again very well done I’m actually learning from this which is awesome considering other apps teach barely anything, here you learn words, hiragana, kanji and even more

Excellent!

Sara Bronson on

I’m a very tactile learner. Being able to write kana and kanji has helped with my writing but also with my vocabulary in general. The subscription is a little pricey, but the app is really well done and very effective in what it does. After trying various apps, this is probably my favourite, and the one to which I am most likely to keep a subscription.
