Suggester is a tool for writing songs and chord progressions. This app will help you find chords that work together. It is efficient and fun; use it to build musical phrases that will carry emotion through tension and release.
Select chords for their harmonic function. The app makes full use of the roman numeral notation.
Simply touch a chord to hear how it sounds. Press the play button to hear the chord progression sequentially and adjust the playback speed.
You can work either forward or backward:
FORWARD - Pick a scale, then build your song from the chords that the app suggests. That's the quickest way to assemble chords that are compatible.
BACKWARD - From the catalog, pick a set of chords that you like. The app will tell you what scales it matches with. After you have selected the scale you want to use, the app can tell you what chords will fit in with the ones you entered before. That is extremely useful in jam sessions!
Pick chords and scales from our huge catalog. To go even further, you can create your own custom scales and custom chords.
To spice things up, you can borrow chords from parallel scales.
Explore new territories by using modulation.
Browse the classic chord progressions to find inspiration.
Use Drag and Drop to reorder chords. Hold your finger on an item for a second to start the drag operation. On iPad, you can also drag chords directly from the suggestions to anywhere in your progression.
Tap the note button on the left to change the duration.
Swipe a chord from right to left to delete it.
Export your songs as audio, MIDI or text.
Every sound generated with the app is also sent to the MIDI output, configurable in the Options. You can route these notes to another app on your device, an external MIDI port, or remotely to another computer by setting up a MIDI Network Session.
You can trigger chords through the MIDI input.
Use drag and drop between apps! ChordPadX and Suggester can communicate through drag and drop. You can also drag pads and chords into another app if it supports MIDI drag and drop.
Sync up your tempo with other apps with the help of Ableton Link.
You can choose between the english notation (C, D, E) and the fixed-do notation (do, re, mi).

Buy immediately!
As a typical amateur muso’ I know bits of theory and have read much which I didn’t really absorb.
This app has turned theory into practice, I hear and I finally understand. Secondary dominants, leading tone, tri tone subs etc., all right there.
Could we have ii/? to go with the V/? That may be an illiterate question, but I’m getting there.
Brilliant app, buy > upgrade > experiment > understand (or don’t).
Very useful songwriting tool
Easy to use and navigate. Good way to start off songs. The ability to export the MIDI file is very useful. As a professional music producer I find this a very useful tool.
Had it for years
It just keeps getting better!
Wow!
This app is amazing. I’m creating and learning at the same time.
Best Chord Suggester and I’ve tried them all
With its ability to endlessly and easily provide common to complex chord progressions and then export them to midi files this is a must for musicians ( ands it’s never crashed or lost a single project in 3 years) 6 stars.
opus
The developer continues to enhance this great music theory and musically creative app on a regular basis 🙏🙏🏿. I will summarize...you can condense two or three years of music theory into your work flow with this app . The app facilitates coherent expansive possibilities for chord progressions with control of note length ,voicing , even arppegiation and so rapidly assists in developing a robust basis for composition and also gives the ability to explore more adventurous chordal structures . This app facilitates rapid advances in work flow for those with some music theory and those who don’t.
It’s easy to use
I use this app to experiment with chord substitutions , most of which I don’t currently know so can’t play...this aspect adds novel feeling during composition.
Well worth the price for any composer in-fact cheaper than a few greasy chips..a kebab and a smelly taxi home . 🙏🙏🏿👍🎩🦄
Slick but scale modes are missing
This app is fantastic in terms of it’s organisation and is intuitive to use. Majority of the melodic minor, harmonic major & minor modes are missing. Hope they will all be included in an update.
Freethos
Very useful app for composing chord progressions on the go. Mac app is good, but would be even better if it intergrated as a DAW plugin.
Great support from the developer!
Loving the app. Noticed an issue when exporting to MIDI with repeat sections and within a very few days there was a new release to fix the issue. Fantastic! Thanks, Mathieu - keep up the good work.
Really useful. Some rough edges but great
Just very useful fpr composition, practising and exploring advanced harmonic concepts. A few issues: Ableton link does not sync properly- I cant find the volume control to mix with other apps-strings great but needs a few more sounds. A great chord addtion would be sus b9 chords as used in modern flamenco jazz or a way of editing existing chords though the breadth of available chords really is fantastic
