Potentially good app but marred by glitches
When it works, this app is effective in helping to improve Chinese reading ability quickly. But I have persistent problems with signing in for a new session. The only way around the problem seems to be to delete the app from my iPad and then download it again. This is time- consuming and annoying, and greatly reduces the incentive to practice every day.
Great App
Expansive, easy to use.
Love the app
I’ve used it for quite a few years and think they do a great job of finding interesting articles and making a learning experience out of it. Totally recommend to someone learning Chinese.
Good to to improve vocabulary, reading and listening
The Chairman’s Bao is a good learning tool for learning Chinese, both simplified and traditional.
Great for reading and listening practice and the word bank and flash cards help with vocabulary building.
Great concept
Really appreciate a platform like this being available to learn Chinese. The App can sometimes be a little glitchy but hopefully will continue to improve with subsequent updates.
Great content but…
The app overrelies on using icons with tiny touch targets. The icons are also black against a red background which is uncomfortable to see. A lot could be done to simplify the UX of the app so that it’s content really shines. Otherwise the articles and notes provided are great.
One of the best ways to learn mandarin
There really is nothing out there like this app. One of the most comprehensive and simple ways to learn mandarin in a fun, educational and interactive manner. For less the cost of a lesson you can use the service for unlimited hours within the month. Truly helpful and fun. Would recommend for beginners to advanced!!
Extremely valuable learning resource
TCB is surely among the best resources available for improving reading and listening comprehension. "Extensive reading" (reading material that one can understand upwards of 98% of) is really important to help a learner internalise a language and its grammar. Graded readers are thus important tools in a language learner's repertoire especially for those at the elementary to upper intermediate levels who cannot yet understand at least 98% of words in a native context.
Not only does TCB have an enormous library of reading material for all levels, but each is accompanied by an audio recording. This makes TCB not only a way to improve reading comprehension, but also listening comprehension. The audio is well paced for the level too. The articles also have quizzes that test your comprehension which is useful. They aren't just simple multiple choice questions either, there are a few different types of questions ranging from multiple choice to rearranging sentences.
The articles also contain explanations for the relevant grammar encountered at the level and the quizzes usually include questions about them. TCB is therefore quite a comprehensive platform and I wholeheartedly would recommend it to any learner of Chinese as extracurricular learning support. It ties in really well with regular courses (eg. At uni). Even if you read and/or listen to just one article a day, TCB will greatly bolster your Chinese learning experience.
WELL WORTH THE SUBSCRIPTION!!!
Without a doubt, this is a 5-Star platform!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Crackling noise in recent playback audios
There is a crackling noise in the recent audio recordings by a man. The microphone used to record the audio is correct and there are cracklings noises. Very annoying.
Articles with crackling noise include: “Chinese drinkers develop a taste for home-made wine”, “Elderly man visits student to thank him for saving his life”, “Online video users in China reach record 888 million”
TCB -read and learn Chinese
Very effective and with graded reading it’s boosts confidence as you see yourself improving
