Great App! Highly recommended!

Chris Bai Long on

I’ve been using this app several years now. I’ve studied Chinese in Beijing for a year but focused on speaking. Therefore my reading skills where quite poor. I used this app to catch up. It’s great because of its current content. Before using this app I bought a whole pile of graded reader books. Even though they were helpful the stories where rather boring and no current topics. I don’t want to read about the “Story of the Goose” I need to learn modern lingo which you’ll find in this app. What motivated me to write this review now after years of use is when they recently updated their app. I had some suggestions for improvement for them and they managed to implement those within a couple of days. Quite impressive! I should also mention that I’m using the paid version. I have lifetime subscription since I’m dedicated to keep learning and improving my reading. It’s worth every cent. Commute to work? I open my app and read an article. Chinese learning done for the day.

Fonts too small despite setting it to the largest

JiaYeong on

Long time user here. Latest update is great. More polished. Content also sufficient, a lot of interesting reading materials. I have 2 suggestions here. Make the font larger as my presbyopic eyes can’t see the largest font well. Also, there are only 3 types of fonts. All 3 not that pleasing for the eyes. Please consider adding in KaiTi Chinese font. Thank you.

Good app but much can be improved

VALKOH123 on

Good app w articles that match different levels of proficiency. However, app performance can be improved as UI is not as user-friendly and app is slow to respond

Great concept, UX can use some improvement

Tom Wills - Singapore on

I bought a one-year subscription and I'm using the app every day to practice reading Chinese. I love the idea of a news format with a continuous supply of new articles at my current reading level, where I can listen to the article read in a native Chinese voice as many times as I need to and also look up the meaning of words from inside the article. In the first couple weeks of using the app, my reading skills are already noticeably improving, which is great! One suggestion on the content: it's very heavy on educational topics (articles about schools, students, professors, etc). I would personally appreciate a bigger percentage of other topics as education is only marginally interesting to me and I would guess that's true for a lot of other users as well. The UX can also use some improvements: right now it's hard to access older articles because you can only do it one page at a time, and the app (as well as the website) is painfully slow to load as well as page back and forth. I'd like to be able to easily go back in time to the very first articles at a given level, for example HSK 2, which is my current level. Also, there's a feature to bookmark an article by adding a star to it, and there's a separate section in the app for bookmarks. That's useful, but I only seem to be able to bookmark a total of 2-3 articles at a time. If I try more than that, they don't show up in the bookmarks section and when I hit "more bookmarks", nothing happens ... the little circle just spins. Lastly, it would be great to be able to speed up or slow down the audio ... right now it goes at a uniform speed which is too fast for me, so I have to listen to each article several times over to get the jist of it. When I get to a more advanced reading level in the future, then maybe I'll want to speed the audio up. Altogether, The Chairman's Bao is a great concept and I'd recommend it to any native English-speaking Chinese learner who wants to up their reading skills.
