Seriöser Journalismus

Good journalism but …

The Guardian increasingly confuses reporting with editorial opinion. I want a newspaper to report but not to tell me what to think.

A terrible downgrade compared to the Puzzles app

Tim_D1 on

Germany

If you’re thinking of downloading this app as a replacement for the soon-to-be closed-down Puzzles app, prepare for severe disappointment. The Guardian’s Puzzles app is one of the best-implemented apps for cryptic crosswords out there, and someone has decided to shut it down. Instead, you’re being pushed towards using this app - and it’s TERRIBLE by comparison. Even the most basic head-bangingly simple things like covering half the entry you’re trying to make with the popup-keyboard - the crossword component was clearly designed and implemented by people who don’t do crosswords, don’t understand how they work, and just don’t care that much. It’s borderline unusable, removes many of the functions that enabled new players to get into crosswords in the first place, and to add insult to injury it’s twice as expensive. I would absolutely pay for this app if it was comparable to the one that’s being inexplicably shut down, but it’s nowhere even close. Save your money, read the news content on the website and go somewhere else for your cryptic crossword fix.

Finally the need to sign up is there

For a long time, the Guardian was one of the only remaining newspapers which offered free and unconditional/uncomplicated access to serious news. Now it’s mandatory to sign up to access articles, that’s a pity…probably dire financial need

Bring back Home page customisation

abcdef87 on

Germany

I am also frustrated with the new app and its layout controls and content access paths. I used to have a customised home page with sections I wanted, in the order I wanted. E.g. I want the “What to watch” section from the culture > TV page back on my Home Screen but I cannot see how to do it.

Fantastic Medium,

We in Germany and Germans, my wife especially and me whenever she tells me about an interesting story, are always impressed. Also: very good layout, excellent journalism, more than worth the subscription. Thanks for the job.

back to 2 stars

Love the paper, latest update broken things again. the app is annoying, every 2nd update loses your saved/favorites and you start at zero again…why? Please fix this! No point saving anything ever, as it will just get lost. Hiding sections no longer hides completely, leaves the section heading, just without the stories.

Discovery tab

Funtooosh on

Germany

Really really sad to see that the ‚Discover‘ tab is gone, it seemed to me a much better solution than the new favorites tab, especially as it was much better designed. Any chance of bringing it back? Apart from that, still one of the best newspaper apps, I'm using it every day, of course.

New Design

AlKapoune on

Germany

I’m sorry, but you cannot use the new app design. It’s AWFUL. Currently, I’m using the web application. The new Home and My Guardian are not useful. Under My Guardian, you cannot customise all topics that you’d like to read. When you hide those topics in Home, they are still visible as large empty sections. It’s really silly. Then, you have those buttons for Save or Share. On my iPhone, they are really large. You can easily click on them while scrolling. Please give me the choice of old and new design.

A balanced source

The Guardian makes news still palatable these days.
