The Guardian app always used to provide its paying subscribers with full access without requiring them to ‘sign in’ with a ‘Guardian account’. Not anymore. The app now locks out its subscribers unless they log on, a process which facilitates the process of building user profiles. For a paper that so prides itself on its coverage of threatening and potentially dangerous power dynamics, this is highly disappointing.
Long time subscriber and this was my favorite news app. Now with this update, all my custom sections on the home screen is gone. No more option to customize. Can’t delete unwanted sections from the home page. Lots of unwanted banners that cannot be removed or hidden. New section “my guardian” can perhaps replace this, but I have to find all sections I had before on the home screen. Live timeline is gone.
I have been a paying Guardian subscriber since the app launched many years ago. Now the app tells me I can’t access offline content as I have no subscription. Very poor app design. I cancelled my subscription to match the apps message.
Removed the app after they introduced to ask to ‘sign in to read’. What a waste.
Whatever the news reported in The Guardian, there is always another article that provides you with a balancing message.
While I understand that good journalism isn’t free, making the app paywalled while still providing the same content for free on the website (which works fine on a mobile browser) just doesn’t make sense. Reason enough for me to stop using this app.
I have serious concerns about the Guardian’s adherence to some important universal values, particularly regarding human rights and decolonization. The coverage of conflicts, especially in the Middle East, lacks balance. They tend to humanize one side while reducing the oppressed and the colonized group, to mere numbers and statistics. It is a clear deviation from objective and impartial reporting. It is inhumane.
Sorry, I left my iPad Pro 2022 at home, this morning. When I returned, the battery had 10% energy left. Battery history showed it was charged to 100% until 7 AM and was used for awhile and the left alone and had a linear decline, which my iPad attributed to the Guardian app for 91%. I had opened the app a week ago and it was still running in the background. I like the Guardian, but not so much when it drains my battery.
Biased against Palestine. Very disappointing on this front.
