Introducing Troublemaker: this is not a 303

The legendary TB-303 has magical properties; it is filled to the brim with analog shimmer. Its output jack is a gateway to a parallel universe and when you twiddle the filter knobs an army of highly trained pixies chisel the square waves from freshly harvested unicorn souls. So if you want a TB-303, you should buy a TB-303. But if you're after *that sound* Troublemaker will give you everything you need in spades.

Troublemaker sports a carefully crafted diode filter emulation and among the available oscillators are the typical raspy, nasal sawtooth and rubbery square wave with its oddball shape and shifting pulse width.

It also has the wow.

Troublemaker is fully Audio Unit (AUv3) compatible, so you can go wild running multiple instances in your favorite DAWs.

It also has:
- MIDI CC controllers for all knobs (predefined),
- Core Midi, Virtual Midi, Bluetooth Midi input,
- MIDI Clock Sync, MIDI Start / Stop support
- Realtime Mutation Probability Engine
- Standalone sequencer supports 1-64 steps
- Audiobus 3 support (audio + MIDI)
- Exports MID and WAV files from the standalone sequencer
- User manual and MIDI charts on ruismaker.com
- Comes with an extra AUv3 plugin version of a modded Troublemaker unit

And unlike the TB-303, it can actually sound like a bass guitar ;-)

I love this but…

PEPGOONER on

I absolutely LOVE this app. It’s utterly brilliant. But I cannot figure out how to use it as an auv3 in GarageBand or logic pro. It just doesn’t seem to to have the same functionality, and is a stripped down version with a piano keyboard rather than the grid based system in the standalone version. So I have to export midi files from the standalone and import them from my files app into my DAW. And then place them into a Troublemaker instrument opened in the DAW. Maybe that was the dev’s intention. Either that or I’m missing something obvious. Still, it works that way, and has been an amazing bass tool, but the extra steps seem a little tiresome some days. But…. as I said, I do love the app.

Almost perfect

Just needs undo function, freeze some steps from randomisation, and 4-8 parts you can seeemlessly move between with copy paste and then it’s perfect. Great app. I still give it 5 stars now because it’s really great fun to use

Great app to generate acid samples

paul_wp on

This is an updated review. The app is great at doing what it says. Acid bass line samples. I just figured out how to record straight into Logic Pro. The only suggestion I have is the developer should add a red banner at the top of the screen when switching away from the app like google maps does so that the user knows it’s still running and using the battery

Just like the 303

Black_knight71 on

I was hoping that I could replicate the sounds of the Roland tr-303 and I can honestly say that this is not far off. Got the tempo to exactly match that of my Korg drum machine and synth creating some lovely acid sounds. Worth the money.

Squelching bass lines screaming leads Lovely to 303 emulation with extras on the top. Get it

I love this so much but..I want midi out

iamimmon on

The sound is great and the ui is very impressive. I really think the sequencer in this would be great for Driving a hardware monosynth so please can we have midi out? The mutations are sooo good!

Nearly a 5...

Love the App... hours of seamless fun. Going to use it live in my Edm band, but just wish there was a way of highlighting or displaying which of the patterns I'm using. 🎹😎

Great App!

A really nice 303esque sequencer and sounds great! Love the extra waves... makes those slack grooves fresh. Wish list... 1. An extra higher octave 2. Ability to save synth settings with patterns and or create synth engine presets. If the app had the above it would be perfect in my opinion! Great work.
