Upwork is becoming greedier day by day. Now they have reached the point where they are even charging connects for proposals invited by the client themselves! This is pathetic and not at all a freelancer-friendly platform. They must reconsider their decisions, as freelancers are now very concerned with their new irrelevant terms and policies. I hope Upwork can understand what a freelancer is going through!
The app is very buggy and the filtering for jobs is very weak. They also require you to pay money just to apply for a job.
It’s a good online platform but still i am waiting for my first online job….
You have to buy connects, spend a good amount of time to prepare a personalised proposal to beat the overcrowded freelancers and in the end the client may not even look at it (happens most of the time). It’s fair we lose the connect if the client decline the proposal after reading through, but I think Upwork should change the policy to refund the connects if the client doesn’t not open the proposals either if they drop the job or finds another freelancer.

After the last update a couple of weeks ago instead of the UI I can see only plain serif text. Extremely unfriendly for usage. Hope this bug will be fixed soon!
notifications are not in real time and typing is very difficult as the autocorrect doesn’t work as in other apps
Makes new users jump through many hoops before letting them know they need to pay for bids and applications. I finally gave them every piece of personal information before they say “insufficient connects to submit proposal for the job”.
I use Upwork as a freelance writer. It’s invaluable for finding new clients and managing contracts. The money being held upfront in Escrow so I don’t have to chase late invoices saves a lot of headache. My main gripe is the currency conversion rate which is set by Upwork and isn’t in line with the true rates. I lose a lot of money in the USD to GBP conversion which I have to do every time as Upwork only operates in USD. On top of the 10% Upwork fee and taxes, it does add up. The Connects bidding system didn’t really work for me as a new user but now I have an established profile I tend to find clients reach out to me rather than having to bid for work.
