Overcast

Was the best podcast app forever but the latest month has killed it for me, not being able to just stream is a huge deal for my use case and the dev has laid out clearly why he removed it But I’ve had endless issues with downloading podcasts, not just press and play now the download will kill itself towards the end or say I don’t have internet etc etc Still 5 stars for the hundreds of hours it saved me and how much I treasured it before the latest update, wish him all the best

I have been using this podcast for years (since 2017 I think?), and got rid of the apple podcast app as this one was so good. The recent update, however, has removed the instant start when you hit play, and is incredibly annoying because you have to suddenly wait for EVERYTHING prior to it starting, even short 10 minute things. Why have we suddenly taken a step back after all this time of having a great product. It’s annoyed me so much that this is my first ever app review, only to register a complaint! Up until that update it would have been 5 stars.

I have used Overcast for about 5 years now. I think it brilliant. The new format makes it even better

I use this app every day and I love it. It is my daily companion for podcast pleasure. It is a pro app for listening to podcasts. Elegant, powerful, unobtrusive. Smart speed is fantastic. A benchmark for excellence in app development. Ads? I'm all in on premium, so no problem there. But I don't think it's a big deal either way. Great work Marco.

I like the update. I don’t mind the streaming going away. Works for me when I’m often in a bad network coverage in a multistory car park

Yes there's been a few issues, but they've been fixed and it works great. Love the UI updates!

The Overcast major update and redesign is clearly a work-in-progress that I’m hopeful will get to great places; but it’s not there yet. Currently my biggest gripe is that there is no good and clear indicator of a new unplayed episode being present in a podcast feed. I think there is a coloured text distinction, but the difference is black vs. dark grey. Anyway, still needs work but still a great podcast app.

Love the app, and all the functions. I love being able to auto skip the ads for the first 15 seconds and last 30 seconds of a podcast. However in the last update I lost one feature that I rely on to sleep. I don’t know how niche this is. I’ve found that listening to old podcasts is a great way to drift off to sleep. I don’t have to worry about missing things, because I’ve heard it before, and it helps me focus instead of my mind whirling on a billion different topics as I am trying to sleep. When one podcast ends, I used to be able to just press play on my headphones to start the next one. Since the last major update, it will not. I now have to get my phone out and manually start the next one. I like listening to lots of shorter podcasts, so I’m doing this every 10 minutes and it just kills it. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and I used to be able to just start another short podcast without even opening my eyes, but now I need to roll over, look at a screen and start the next one. I can find a setting to automatically play the next one, but then it just plays through the whole playlist without ever stopping. I’ve tried using all sorts of different playlists and options, and I just can’t get it to play the next podcast when I press play on my headphones.
